New York Daily News: Police to lose sidewalk parking downtown

Reported by uncivil on Tue, Sep 29 2009

------
This story nicely illustrates two of Transportation Alternatives' campaigns -- reducing parking placard abuse and reclaiming the streets for people.
------

For once, cops' vehicles are getting booted.

The Department of Transportation is building a new pedestrian mall in downtown Brooklyn, forcing transit officers who park their own and Police Department cars on the sidewalk outside the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station, to hit the road.

"I'm glad the DOT has recognized that there are better uses for sidewalks than parking," said Joe Chan of the Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn Business Improvement District, which helped design the space in conjunction with the DOT.

"Last time I checked, it's not appropriate to park on sidewalks," Chan said.

Pedestrians and straphangers welcomed the change: Jameer Henson, 31, a law clerk, said, "In the mornings it always bottlenecks at the top of the steps because there's only like half a sidewalk for the people coming and going to the subway. I won't be sad to see the cars go."

This is awesome.

"'It's not a very bright idea', said one transit detective"

Dude, you wanna know what's not very bright? Our law enforcement personnel consistently breaking the law and then whining about it when somebody tells them to stop.

"'This street's already too crowded,' he said. 'Cars can barely get by as it is with all the traffic and double-parking going on. Just imagine if you have 50 people sitting in the street.'

Ah, more nonsense from the "windshield-perspective" crowd.

I wonder where they are going to park there rmp's being that the city does not want to provide parking for city vehicles. The next complaint from the public will be all of the police cars and their personal cars are taking up all of the legal parking spaces. Where can I park?

Mikeb: The ones that don't drive don't care where anybody can park. Most of the complainers on this site don't drive. If they do drive they are just jealous that they can't park where ever their little heart desires.

What is going to happen is the DOT is going to put up signs for there SEZ. What ever parking the neighborhood had will be gone. Like I have been saying all along. You can try to change the rules. But you can not change a signed contract.

@mikeb: still waiting for you to provide the clause in the contract that specifically REQUIRES the City to provide parking for NYPD/FDNY employees. My guess is that it doesn't exist and that if your unions are telling you otherwise, then they are pulling a fast one on you.

Lawnand order like usual you guessed wrong. I have the contract. It states just what I said in the previous post. Unfortunately I was advised by my union president not to post our contracts on the internet or hand them to the members of the public. I will respect the wishes of my union president.

Oh and by the way. The city offered a property owner a big chunk of cash to buy my over sized station a parking lot. The property owner refused the offer. Now the city is condemning the property. The owner is not getting a single cent from the city and we are getting a new parking lot!

@mikeb: I expected as much. "I have proof, really I do! But I can't show it to you."

Law: You have no idea what you are talking about. They can not show you their contract. Just like I can't show you mine. It is none of your business. Our contracts states they have to give us parking privileges. Regardless of what you say. There is nothing that you can do about it. It is our contract.

The reason why my union president does not want to make our contract public is because we have perks that were negotiated and agreed upon by the city. If people like you who don't drive and have nothing better to do but complain about a perk that was agreed upon by our government. We are not going to give you more ammo. Let me see your W-2 and your contract at your job and criticize how much money and perks that you have.

I have something called respect. I will respect the wishes of my union president. We have perks that were negotiated by my union and agreed upon by OUR CITY. I would have no problem giving up the parking privileges for a 20% raise.

"I have something called respect". That's one thing that placard abusers and their apologists don't have.

Lawandorder you say that I have no respect? But yet who was the one caught fabricating photos of legally parked cars and posting them on this site? Like I said many times these issues do not concern you. YOU DO NO DRIVE. Myself and 3 other members of the service park our cars on a corner where there is a no standing zone. We are told "thank you for opening a spot for me" at least three times a week from the public. If you are able to not be small minded and look at the bigger picture you will then understand why they say thank you. If myself and the three other MOS grabbed the first legal parking spots in our neighborhood. That is 4 less parking spots for my neighbors. That means four additional neighbors will be circling the block looking for parking.

@mikeb - I have never fabricated a photo. The various trolls on this site may have accused me of such, but please be assured that they are completely wrong (as with their hyperventilating on "courtesy", the law, reality, etc.).

And yes, these issues most assuredly DO concern me, as they should all citizens, even if we do not drive. These are public employees, paid for by tax dollars, misusing public space, abusing the public trust and breaking the law. So, yes, this issue concerns all of us. If you'd actually take a moment to read this site's supporting pages, maybe that would help you in understanding how this fits into a broader transportation policy discussion and reform.

I encourage you to think harder about what the "bigger picture" actually is.

It's unfortunate that you will not share the contract. I will pursue other avenues to obtain it.

As usual Law you have no clue on what you are talking about. It is not against the law for us to use our legal placards to park where people that do drive can't park. How does the parking concern you? I'll answer that for you. It doesn't. You are not the one that has to circle block after block to find a parking spot. As Mikeb said they are happy that we take the spots that they can't park in. As for fabricating photos. You do. As a matter of fact you just posted one that you posted over a year ago. I guess you ran out of photo's. As far as you getting a copy of Mikeb's contract or anyone else good luck. They are not open to the public.
