New York Post: Thou shalt double park

Reported by uncivil on Mon, Oct 05 2009

Where's the fire, rabbi?

The city Correction Department rabbi who resigned after The Post revealed he organized a bar-mitzvah bash for an inmate's son behind bars recently has been parking illegally while displaying a placard that falsely claims he is a firefighter.

The Post spotted Rabbi Leib Glanz using an official Uniformed Firefighters Association placard Friday while praying in a Williamsburg synagogue.

Manhattan, NY - District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau has declined to file charges against Rabbi Leib Glanz, who resigned from the Correction Department over a scandal involving a wealthy inmate’s lavish bar mitzvah for his son inside the Manhattan Detention Complex.
Rabbi Glanz, who served as an agency chaplain, resigned in June after reports of the 60-person bar mitzvah surfaced in the press. His exit came during a probe of a pattern of favorable treatment for Jewish inmates in the jail, including an engagement party for the daughter of the inmate who threw the bar mitzvah, Tuvia Stern.
Rabbi Glanz, who was appointed nearly a decade ago by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, is believed to exercise political influence as a prominent figure in the Satmar Hasidic community.
Manhattan DA spokeswoman Alicia Maxey Greene confirmed that no charges had been filed against Rabbi Glanz. Following the revelation about the bar mitzvah held last December, the DA and the city Department of Investigation probed the role of the rabbi in facilitating the party where guests of Mr. Stern were said to have dined on fine china inside the jail.

A DOI spokeswoman declined comment.
Peter Curcio, who was the department’s Chief of Facility Operations, resigned June 15 after he failed to report the party to his supervisors. He was promoted to that post just a month before the Dec. 30 bar mitzvah. No charges have been filed against Mr. Curcio, according to the Manhattan DA’s office.
After being suspended for two weeks once the story broke, Chief Curcio, the second highest-ranking uniformed officer in the department, resigned. Then-Correction Commissioner Martin F. Horn retired at the end of July.
