They tend to the sick in body and spirit, as well to those who have departed this mortal soil.
But all too often, their reward is a parking summons.
At least that's what many members of the clergy lamented in City Council hearings last month that led to unanimous passage of a bill expanding the rights of the clergy to receive city-issued free parking permits.
The bill was vetoed last week by Mayor Bloomberg. But Monday, members of the Council's Transportation Committee are set to override that veto. The full Council will follow suit Dec. 21, with the bill becoming law after 90 days.
Similarly, the committee will vote to override a veto of a bill to impose a five-minute grace period before tickets can be issued for overtime parking at muni-meters and violation of alternate-side parking rules. The clergy parking bill had its genesis with parking tickets issued to a rabbi for the Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation in Washington Heights.

There should be NO free ride. NONE. Bloomberg has it set up so all his cronies have handicap placards. How many times i drive around for hours looking to park LEGALLY in a muni spot only to find most of the spots are taken up by cops and handicap placards. The only people who need preferential treatment are people in wheel chairs. How many big fat pigs have we seen waddle out of the store with loads of packages to get into their cars and suvs with handicap plates. Why should anybody park for free. This is discrimination. Think of it, free parking and premium parking and all you have to do is lie about a handicap. Fat, lazy and old do not constitute a handicap.

Twobanger you have no clue what you are talking about. For you to get handicap placards or plates you must submit documentation from your doctor that you are handicap. Just because a person can walk with packages in their arms does not mean they are healthy. They could have a heart problem. If your mom or dad had a health issue and had a handicap placard or plate you wouldn't be on this web site complaining about it.

Actually I do know what I am talking about. My father had a heart condition and was thinking about handicap plates. I asked why he needed them and his answer was that he might have a heart attack walking across the parking lot.
To which I answered "better in a parking lot than at 50 miles per hour". He did not speak to me after that for a month. Three months later he had a massive coronary. He was dead before he hit the ground the doctor said. He had just gotten out of his car and died on the sidewalk in front of his house. I am comforted that he passed when he did. If he had had been five minutes earlier he would of died at 60 miles per hour on route 80 headed twords the George Washington Bridge. How many innocent people might have been hurt? I can't tell you how many times I have been almost run down while directing traffic by a senior citizen with a blue handicap permit hanging from their mirror. The point is people go to their doctors and pester them to sign the paperwork because everybody feels that their entitled.
I won't even get into the placard abuse by civil servants.

I'm sorry for your loss, but that doesn't stop that fact that people need the handicap permits for a reason. They don't need a heart condition to get one. My father can't walk for a long distance. He has one for that reason.
