Valuable sidewalk space? It's a small little triangle in the middle of Times Square. Walk on the regular sidewalk instead of on the triangle...problem solved.

seems to be the pedestrians have more space to walk on the sidewalk. whats the problem? look at all that space the pedestrians have.
Prior comments are missing the point by light-years. The fact that these are recruiters means they are not doing any emergency work and have no excuse to be parking on this sidewalk. Opinions that recruiters are doing important work in some general sense (or on the commenter's view of the war)could not be more irrelevant.
In addition, no one can serious question whether this stretch of Times Square is one of the most seriously congested parts of New York City. I have no idea how the poster got a picture of this spot with so few pedestrians but ordinarily it is jam-packed with tourists, many of whom have never navigated a big-city street in their life. This is exactly where the extra sidewalk space is needed.
Like most New Yorkers I sometimes find tourists irritating but we all know they bring lots of money into the city. To allow cars to park in this spot out of some misguided notion of alliegance to the U.S. military just so these recuriters don't have to look for or pay for a parking space is ridiculous.
To all posters,
If you put up crap about the jobs of the people parking here, it will come down. This site is not a forum for discussing the army, nor wars, nor other things that don't contribute to the conversation about permit parking abuse.
Just like many other blogs, the moderators edit it continuously, and posts that are not germane come down. Don't act surprised that this is not a place where you can say anything you want. There are no rules that state that we have to keep anything here that you write. This is also not a first amendment issue, because we aren't the government and we aren't pretending to promote a site that has any old kind of comment flame war on it.
And you better believe this site has an agenda: to get the city to re-evaluate the issuance of permits, to reduce that number substantially, and to get the NYPD to enforce the laws on permit abuse, particularly those that are issues of safety hazards and clearly fraudulent abuse of permits. All this is clear in the many pages of content you can link to at the top of the home page.
On a personal aside, to comment of more enforcement of all traffic laws, I would greatly welcome it, starting with double parking, failure to yield at intersections, blocking the box, speeding, idling, and running red lights to name a few. That's just my personal opinion though. That's not within the purview of this site, obviously.
You know what would fix this is have the DoD pay for a garage in the area. That will never happen and those guys don't make nearly enough money to do that themselves. So if people want this one fixed then write a politcian to get it fixed, lets see how long that will take. I bet the war will be over!!!
I also just don't see the safety hazard, there is still plenty of room on the island there and none of the crosswalks are blocked. Let them do their jobs and leave them alone. I know the cops won't write them summonses and even if TEA's did the government won't pay them.

I got into a discussion of the war because the cheerleaders were using it as an excuse to justify sidewalk parking.
I can remember being forced into the street at that location because of so many tourists.
Not to mention events on the island, like the time Koch filmed that country western video, and a Don King boxing exhibition.
So walk around, it's a place you do not need to walk to unless you want to go there. I have been in Times Sq a million times and was never forced to walk onto that little island.
I agree. Nobody walks on this island. Additionally, it is my understanding that vehicles with G-plates can get tickets but don't have to pay them because there is no one to send the ticket or see who the vehicle is registered to. So I suppose that the PED could ticket them but it just wouldn't make a difference. Lastly, just walk around the car it's not that serious. It can't be.
For one, I did not get into a discussion about the war. My point was do not disrespect the men and women who wear the uniform because of your opposition to the current administration and the war. Secondly, yes because I am a cop and don't think it's a problem is what matters, we are the ones who write the summonses and any cop I know will never write someone in the armed forces (especially since most of us are vets anyway). Thirdly, if you think the NYPD is a bunch of moron then why don't you either join us and see for yourself what kind of dedicated and intelligent people we are, or get out of NYC since you obviously don't think much of it or the people protecting it.
We do a job, we do it very well. People have gotten filthy rich over the last ten years because of us. Is there permit abuse? Yes. Are some things bad? Yes. But for the most part from what I have seen on this site is a lot of jealousy and petty BS anger towards cops. Some things will be addresses due to this and other forums like this. For the most part though, things will keep trucking on as usual in NYC like it has for so many years. By the way I could care less what you think about the war, just don't disrespect our armed forces because you don't like our president.
For one, pulling someone over is part of the job. Another part of the job is a little something called discretion. If I pull you over and you seem like a good person, know what you did wrong, and are contrite about it then well why would I hurt you by writing you a summons. Sometimes a little talking to goes a lot farther than a summons. It is something I am allowed to do and probably do it more than anything. Also, if I wrote everyone a summons that crossed my path I would never be able to handle 911 jobs, plus I don't like giving the city extra revenue.
Second, I understand your problem with the war but you obviously have not read what I have written. Your problem is with the president and his administration, NOT the armed forces. They are doing what they are told by the commander-in-chief. That is how it works. You are entitled to your opinion about it being an "illegal" invasion but don't blame the men and women who carried out their orders, they did not make the decision to do it.
Third, cops in the 60's, 70's, and 80's got away with a lot more than just these parking issues. They not only parked where they wanted, but if someone said something they got ignored and no one in the PD or city would help. I have noticed a change in the last few years, not all has been done because of this site.
And if someone disagrees with you it does not make them stupid, it just makes them opinionated. Looks like the only thing we agree on is our hatred for the Mayor and the PC.

OH by the way men and women really aren't civil servants. So by the very name of this site this picture should not even be posted.
