New York Daily News: Mayor Bloomberg unconcerned about umarked NYPD cars getting towed

Reported by uncivil on Wed, Mar 17 2010

Mayor Bloomberg wasn't offering any sympathy for NYPD detectives who've had their unmarked cars towed to city impound lots.

"They can tell it to the judge or tell it to their precinct commander, and they'll work it out," the mayor said, reacting to a Daily News report. "The law should apply to everyone."

The Detectives' Endowment Association complained that tow trucks working for Internal Affairs have met their quota of four tows a day by tailing detectives and then hooking their cars while they arrest suspects and escort witnesses.

"I'm not complaining about our cars being towed that are blocking pumps, bus stops or impeding vehicular traffic," DEA President Michael Palladino said. "I am complaining about quotas and selective enforcement....The current program jeopardizes the safety of cops and of prisoners."

Bloomberg has cut the number of placards issued to city officials and agencies, and a special Internal Affairs unit enforces parking abuses by cops.
