New York Daily News: Foul-mouthed ex-Hiram aide tried to bully way out of arrest with fake police placard: prosecutors

Reported by uncivil on Wed, May 05 2010

A foul-mouthed former aide to disgraced ex-Sen. Hiram Monserrate cussed out a city cop and tried to bully his way out of an arrest by flashing a fake police placard, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Wayne Mahlke, 48, was stopped at a red light near the Queensboro Bridge just after 9 a.m. when he saw NYPD Officer Denise McDonald on patrol.

"Why don't you do your job, you fat b----!" Mahlke shouted in what prosecutors said was an unprovoked verbal onslaught Sunday. When the 19-year NYPD veteran asked for his license, Mahlke tried to maneuver his 2009 Honda Civic past her but she stopped him by stepping in front of his car, prosecutors said.

Mahlke then pulled out an official state Senate business placard and a forged police placard, trying to pull rank, they said.

"You don't know who I am," Mahlke reportedly told her. "I'm higher ranking than you. I work for Mayor Bloomberg."

She was having none of it.

Mahlke was charged with failing to obey a police officer and possessing a forged police placard. He also did not have a valid driver's license, police said.

I drive back and forth on the 59th street bridge all the time. I understand his frustration in the traffic not moving at all. BUT, why is this artical here? I read all three articles and I didn't see any inappropriate action on the part of the officer. I would assume you meant the actions of the UNEMPLOYED ex-monserrate aide. Yes, he is unemployed. He used an expired(most likely) state placard and a fake NYPD placard to try to weasel his way out. I say throw the book at this POS cause he was in the wrong in this matter. Kudos to the officer who stood her ground against him. And from the picture, he sure looks angry at the world.

Wayne Mahlke seems like a real unpleasant bastard from this and other articles about him (and why he fired). The articles don't say why Mahlke decided to verbally abuse the police officer, and maybe he was just having a bad day (still no excuse). Another article said he could face 7 years in jail for this. Really? I know the whole "assaulting an officer" thing but 7 for verbal assault? I doubt he'll do time - probably community service.

I think this article is appropriate to this site because it shows how he (and many others) are trying to use illegal (fake or expired) placards. I'm glad the cop showed some authority here and didn't let him weasel out of it.

This is the common reaction from those who return, while I am still photographing their vehicle illegally parked, and some even resort to physical assault - another act historically covered by "professional courtesy" in the 110th. Fortunately, after a couple of years of turning the photos over to IAB, illegal parking is down and so are the incidents of pedestrian collisions with vehicles. Coincidence .... perhaps ... but then again perhaps not. I wonder if vehicle collisions with pedestrians are up where ever those parking illegally to shop at the mall now are parking and driving.

m0, we may agree on a few things but I would have to disagree here. Mahlke is an ex-employee of the government using a fake/expired placard. This site was founded on the idea of civil servants flouting and abusing parking priviledges and placards. Lately, it's been abot handicapped, funeral homes and other such irrelevant stories. I may be off-base but I think the assault charge could be him trying to drive off while she was in front of his vehicle.

hiyall, what does your post have anything to do with this article? The officer was doing her job while he was cursing at her and almost ran her over when she tried to stop his vehicle. She wasn't illegally parked to do shopping in queens plaza. Stop trying to redirect any interest to your cause. You have just lost more credibility.

It is the jerk who got on her case with the attitude, that I was referring to. The officer did a job that I support based on the facts in the article. Too often, the responding officers in our neighborhood side with the abuser. This officer should receive acknowledgment of a job well done.

Illegal parking is down in your area Hiyall. Oh really. I was just in your area yesterday and your lovely little area was full of parked cars. I guess you were either at work or your just full of hot air.

Sounds like an unjustified traffic stop on the part of the officer, but boy, does Mahlke sound like a jerk.

mvodohmh,

I think we agree on things, but you might have misread my post.

My point was that the article didn't provide enough information to determine if actual assault (as opposed to verbal) has taken place (whether or not he had hit her with his car). I don't support assault - even verbal. But, if he didn't touch (which we don't know from this article) her with his car, then 7 years seems a bit excessive.

Again, I still think he should be charged with the illegal use of a placard (and assault if warranted).
