Streetsblog: Eyes on the Street: 28th Precinct Loves the St. Nicholas Ave Bike Lane

Reported by uncivil on Wed, Sep 08 2010

If you get around on a bicycle in Upper Manhattan, the St. Nicholas Avenue bike lanes are essential. They're the only on-street lanes in the borough between 120th Street and 160th Street. Many cyclists don't even bother with the lanes, though, because they're routinely filled with parked cars.

Normally one might ask the NYPD to enforce the rules of the road on St. Nicholas, but at least in the 28th Precinct, such a request seems futile. At precinct HQ between 122nd and 123rd, a line of police vehicles stick their noses out into the bike lane day after day, completely obstructing it. Pedestrians aren't spared; some cars are parked halfway or entirely on the sidewalk. And these aren't just squad cars positioned for a speedy exit in case of emergency. Many of the cars appear to be personal vehicles bearing police union bumper stickers or other markers that the owner carries some official authority.

Yes, bike lanes are essential... If they're used at all! Take for instance the new bike lanes on Aleen Street in downtown Manhattan. I drive by there on a daily basis and I have seen it used maybe ten times since it got installed. Good call Sadik-Khan and DOT! I cannot tell you the numerous times I have seen bikers disregard any traffic law much less common sense by rushing through all kinds of traffic, pedestrians, other bikers just because they're on bikes. I've always said it and I'll keep on saying it: If bikers want to be treated with respect and courtesy, OBEY THE TRAFFIC LAWS! Being on a bike does NOT entitle you to ram your way through crowded streets and sidewalks just because you can! I drive all over the city on my job and I always give leeway to bikers. A little honk here and there to let them know I'm about to pass, waiting for them to pass the intersection before I make my turn, etc... I'm all for having bikes and bikers qualified and licensed. You are operating a vehicle that in the wrong hands can cause serious injury or maybe even death. Use your heads, bikers. Please.

Where would you like them to park the vehicles? They have no lots to park them in. You say it is blocking a bike lane. The bikers don't use them anyway.

So is it your theory, mvodohmh, that the NYPD should BREAK THE LAW because you can find some bikers out there who also break the law? Yeah, drug dealers break the law too, so I guess by your logic we should just let cops run around shooting innocent people if they feel like it?

Let's get real. It is their job to obey the law. If there is a problem with parking in the area, they need to work with DOT to address it LEGALLY. End of story!

I also forgot to mention that that is a SEZ.

@Norwood. Where in my reply did you read the Police should break laws? Where did you read I said anything about drug dealers? We are/were talking about the bike lane where supposed bikers use them. Since you brought up drug dealers, So in your convoluted theory, drug dealers are innocent people? How are they innocent? Who do they sell the drugs to? Who becomes the victims of the drugs? Not the durg dealers! They get rich off the victims! But I digress. Bikers should follow the VTL as do motorists do. Yes, the NYPD should talk with the DOT about getting proper parking for the MOS but Bloomturd and the DOT green nazis are against all things logical! Make do with less, what a joke!!!

This is very, very simple mvodohmh.
Parking ANY personal vehicle in a bicycle lane, is ILLEGAL with ANY placard, at ANY time, SEZ or otherwise.

An exception would ONLY be made for an officer directly responding to an EMERGENCY SITUATION. That is clearly NOT what is going on here.

They're just BREAKING THE LAW out of convenience and arrogance. Make whatever excuses you want - the documentary proof is indisputable.

Otherwise, yes, you digress. And you demonstrate even more faulty logic that is not worth any further time.

I expect the NYPD to ENFORCE the law. I will NOT tolerate them breaking it. Parking in a bicycle law is breaking the law. It cannot be tolerated. Period.

Once again it is a SEZ. Period. End of story.

@Norwood. You still haven't answered my questions. Sure, you can say all you want about this not worth your time. That's fine, answer the questions and be done with it. Otherwise, run away from any discussion like a supposed know-it-all with all the answers. You know what, I'll probably never hear from you again on this subject so be gone with you and you can go back to the "dirty 5-2" and document all the travesties of justice you see there. Oh and by the way, please reread the thread. You seem to have mistaken some other poster's comments for mine. Please respond to them and not throw a blanket response. Thank you and have a great day!

You may be right, mvodohmh, I might have misunderstood your original comment.

Your comment seemed to be defending the cops - who were breaking the law - by attacking the bike lane itself. It looks like a case of blaming the victim!

If that is not the case, I missed the mark. Of course, if that was the case, your comment was entirely off-topic, and entirely irrelevant. You may not like bikers, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the NYPD's responsibility to FOLLOW THE LAW.
