This one was so outrageous I had to take a picture with my phone. This person is parked on the cross walk on a Sunday afternoon when lots of other parking was available. I saw a disabled guy have to walk into the intersection to get back onto the sidewalk. Argh!

You have got to be kidding me!!! Is that a true NYPD placard? It doesn't matter, it's dead illegal!!!

Hey Steve, I have a question. I know it does not apply to this pic but was hoping you could answer it anyway.
Do cars with NYC Disability Permits (SPI) have to be registered in NYS? Can an out of state car legally have an SPI plaque?

Hey BK Lawyer, missed the small print about NYPD and posting plates of LE vehicles.....

The best part of that area is the construction on the building across the street. There are signs up put up by the construction company warning that they will tow *all* private vehicles if parked in front of their loading area. Sure enough, one morning I saw that they had hired a private company to tow a car with a court office badge in the window - I doubt the legality of such a move (I doubt you can impound a car off of a public street - I'd imagine only the NYPD can do that) but it was funny. Then again, I'd probably be more afraid of Boymelgreen's hired help than the cops anyday.
This area is probably one of the worst in the city for illegal placard abuse, unless all of Downtown Brooklyn is an SEZ.

Not all of downtown Brooklyn is an SEZ, but that block is. The court house is right on the corner.

i've never heard of a private company towing a vehicle unless it was in a driveway. i dont think they can do that.

And the private tow company still needs NYPD to write a ticket before they tow it. The construction company has no right to tow for signs they put up.
A sign in NYC is not enforcable unless it says Dept of Transportation on the bottom.
That's just as illegal and maybe even more outrageuos than wht the cops try to pull. I hope whatever badge got towed took revenge.

But back to the point of this post--this illegal and unsafe parking job forces pedestrians into traffic. This guy should get towed. No one seems to have any "free speech" to offer on that subject.

#12 -- I saw a car parked like this one a couple weeks ago on 12th street off 1st Ave. Walking by, I noticed people mostly going around. But one guy looked PO'd and decided to use the crosswalk anyway - by hopping up and walking across the hood of the car. Two other guys then did the same thing (guess it took only one to start the parade) -- the last guy had hiking boots on and walked across the hood a bit heavily :) . Guess they were getting payback for the "insult". I did not notice whether there was any plaque, sign, etc in the windshield.

Intentionally walking on a car hood and causing damage. Criminal mischief. Car hood costs more than $250, that makes it a felony. You observed a felony, and did not report it. Good job. Keep up the "stop snithcing" mentality unless of course you're snitching on a violation.

yeah i'll give you guys this one. this is something that i would never do. you are asking for trouble. leave your car and come back to a dent or a key'd door. enjoy the new paint job that would cost as much as a month for a garage space.

I see. So, I should yell out to the guy to wait while I call the PD. If he doesn't, then I should physically stop him? Get real. Either I end up with a busted nose or if I successfully restrain him, a lawsuit. I assume you carry a gun and have arrest authority. I don't. Let's say I did report it. When a sector car gets around to coming they will ask: Who was it? Don't know - never saw him before. What did he look like? tall, while, white shirt, dark pants. Hair color? Grey Which way did he go? That way. Which one should I tell on -- the first, second, or third? What do you think the priority of something like this would be to the responding officers. SO I should report it in order for the paperwork to get filed away and forgotten? Yea, right.

That's right #30, you did the right thing... I've been reading some of the other posts and it seems to me that whenever someone approaches an officer regarding another officer's illegally parked car, they just turn and walk away...So someones car got walked on, serves that person right....DON'T PARK IN THE CROSS WALK. I parked in a cross walk just a wee bit for lack of space, and NYPD did not hesitate to give me a fat ticket....Good for you #30...

#30, #31, you are both wrong.
#30. You should have called 911. Don't worry about if they get away. As you pointed out, that is NOT your job. All you need to do is describe what happened, give a description of the perp (all 3 if you can, or what you can remember), and a dirrection of flight. Thats it. After that you can leave if you'd like, or hang around and try to assist the responding officers if you can. But NOT reporting that CRIME makes you guilty too.
#31. First of all, the poster said they are not sure if that was a cops car, but to whom it belongs is not the point. As you pointed out, you parked in a crosswalk once. How would you feel if your car got walked on, and your hood damaged? The point is that a CRIME was committed, and no one did anything. They just let it happen. However, VIOLATIONS are quick to be posted on this website.
