Parking on the sidewalk

Observed by handsome1 on Fri, Jun 08 2007

I have lived in this building for almost 30 years, right next to a fire house Ladder Co. 25, a car parking garage and a National Car Rental. EVERYBODY feels free to park on the sidewalk, but the firefighters do so with impunity. This car has been parked in front of my building, on the sidewalk on the corner of W. 77th and Amsterdam for over 36 hours. None of the Traffic Cops will ticket any of these cars parked illegally on the sidewalk. HELP!!

Who cares? How is that an invalid permit? There is plenty of room on that sidewalk for people to get by.

72 hrs. maybe the fireman had been injured fighting a fire and is in the hospital and cannot move the car.

You stated everyone parks on this sidewalk, so why are you targeting the FDNY??? Do you have an axe to grind with them?? Their is plenty of room for pedestrians to get around the car, and this Firehouse is in Manhatten so parking is probably very limited.

Yeah, FD tends to do that around the firehouses mostly because there is an insufficient amount of parking spaces designated "No Standing Except Fire Dept." I think you should take this to DOT and remove a few meters on the block and add room for four or five more FD spaces.

I ABSOLUTELY as a New York City resident, ex-NYPD P.O., and current NYS based federal officer, am OFFENDED that you would firstly even HAVE a complaint regarding the FDNY, and even level a complaint using this forum!!! I, in my rookie NYPD years used to work out of the CPP (Central Park Precinct) when homicides were a weekly occurence and insurance fires were out of control on the 100 to 125th street areas north and west of the park.

I have made some VERY good friends that have given their BLOOD, and have made the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE (pre/post 9-11-01) in THAT VERY SAME firehouse that you have the UNMITIGATED GALL to ball about on here. I am NOT going to rail on this supposedly "handsome1" as I have previously vetted some of the past poster's baseless claims. Instead I will simply part with a few words of suggestion....

1. When you walk past the Firehouse and you notice this same car or others with a FDNY ACTIVE Fire-Fighter plaque in the window, simply walk to the Firehouse and look at the bronze memorial plaque of the members who from January 1, 1901 until today have honorably gave their own lives TO SAVE YOURS!!!!

Matthew Barnes, Firefighter, Ladder 25
John Collins, Firefighter, Ladder 25
Kenneth Kumpel, Firefighter, Ladder 25 (Posthumously PROMOTED to Fire Marshal)
Joseph Rivelli Jr., Firefighter, Ladder 25
Paul Ruback, Firefighter, Ladder 25

2. After you have looked at the plaque of the deceased, (who were in life and at the time of their deaths, MORE MANLY THAN YOU WILL EVER BE!)...go up to the brave and noble soul donning a FDNY uniform at Ladder 25, and ask him...Could you please move your car off of the sidewalk, so that my underlying feeling of "Captain of industry superiority" may now continue until I can find some way of rescinding ALL of the handicapped civilian plaques that are clogging up the artieries of NYC's streets.

Point blank, you sir,.....need a hobby.

#3 I don't think anybody is targeting the FDNY. Have a look at the rest of this site. See also my comments to #6 below.

#6 - I'm confused, how does all that mean that civil servants can break laws? I thank FDNY for their service. I just don't believe that they should be allowed to break the law with impunity. If there is indeed a parking issue, perhaps the firehouse should take that up the DOT to allocate more spaces. Or maybe the Dept can help their employees figure out alternatives ways to get to work.

People should be allowed to park on sidewalks like they do in Europe. And I mean everyone, not just uncivil servants.

Yes your honor, I plead not guilty and those are my defenses.

But he's right, FDNY is not NYPD and they desreve to park there, but the rules are the rules.

#9. YOU THANK THE FDNY FOR THEIR SERVICE....???
JUST "HOW" DO YOU THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE..???
HAVE YOU WHIPPED OUT YOUR CHECKBOOK AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE U.F.A. (UNION) ???
HAVE YOU SENT ANY DENOMINATION OF "THANKS" FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE NEW YORK FIREFIGHTER BURN CENTER?? HELL, EVEN THE CEREMONIAL UNIT THAT PLAYS THE PIPES AT FIREFIGHTER'S FUNERALS NEED DONATIONS..The FDNY Emerald Society Pipes & Drums...fdnypipesanddrums.com/sponsor.cfm

IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE ANY OF THE ABOVE, OR AT THE VERY LEAST SHOOK A FIREFIGHTER'S HAND AND GAVE HIM OR HER A HEART-FELT "THANK YOU" FOR THEIR SERVICE, THEN PLEASE FEEL FREE NOT TO COMMENT ON WHAT YOU MAY FEEL A FIREFIGHTER IS DOING INCORRECTLY OR "ILLEGALLY".

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY THOSE FIREHOUSES ARE PACKED WITH TOURISTS WHO STOP TO SAY THANK YOU AND TAKE PICTURES WITH FIREFIGHTERS??? BECAUSE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD THEY ACTUALLY TAKE TIME OUT OF THEIR DAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYDAY HEROES AND THE MEMBERS' SELFLESSNESS...AND SOME EVEN BAKE AND COOK FOR THEIR FIREFIGHTERS FOR ALL THAT THEY GIVE.

HERE IN NEW YORK CITY PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF AND "HANDSOME1" TAKE IT AS AN ENTITLEMENT BECAUSE YOU ARE A NYC RESIDENT, AND THEN KVETCH ABOUT FDNY PARKING ISSUES...ONLY TO LATER SAY...I "THANK" THE FDNY FOR THEIR SERVICES BUT...BLAH BLAH BLAH..ETC...YEAH RIGHT PAL!

Alias. The people on this web site that complain about how The FDNY, NYPD, and COURT OFFICERS feel they shouldn't get a break. They want them to circle the block or take the bus or subway to work. They don't realize that they are out there risking their lives to keep you safe or to save you from a fire or save your house from burning down or keeping you safe while you are in court for jury duty or any other business. I bet if Bloomberg was to raise our taxes to pay for parking at all FDNY, NYPD, COURT OFFICES and USPS facilities people would be complaining about that too.
