Invalid Free Parking

Observed by chester on Thu, Jul 19 2007

Several cars parked on CPW and 61 St. had NYPD Restricted Parking plates- Transit Bureau District 1 but were not valid because the license plate numbers did not match the numbers on the permits.

I guess there is always the "It's not the officer's normal car" excuse. I don't know. I doubt that anyone would be bold enough to park on the east side of CPW in those three blocks with a placard if they weren't a cop. TB is right there and surely you would get caught. Plus, in this particular case it is No Parking Anytime, but between 61st-59th it is No Standing Except Authorized (NYPD). So even if this car was not there, you couldn't park there either.

I pass this spot regularly and posted quite a few violations from last winter and spring. Since then I have not seen any sidewalk parking or crosswalk blocking, which were my chief complaints. In my view the the biggest remaining problem are (1) the personally owned vehicles of NYPD illegally parked between 62nd and 63rd in the area marked "NYPD owned vehicles only" and (2) the resulting chronic parking by RMPs in the bus stop just north of Columbus Circle across from the hotel because the personally owned vehicles are taking up all the spaces that the RMP are supposed to park in.
