Department of Education employee needs some schoolin'

Observed by lawandorder on Tue, Sep 04 2007

The car was parked in a No Parking Anytime zone, and the plate number did not match the one listed on the permit.

dragonman - the car is still parked illegally and the permit is still invalid because it does not list the correct license plate. In fact, the permit has spaces for 2 license plates -- the second space is blank.

I have a placard too Lawandorder and there are times that I have to use my son's car for what ever reason and I use my placard which is legal. Just because the plate doesn't match doesn't make the placard illegal.

dragonman: You're right -- plates not matching don't make it illegal, but they make the permit invalid for use.

What makes this particular case illegal is the parking in an area prohibited by the placard, even if it was valid.

Also of note: this person bought the car in Denville, NJ, and the car has New Jersey plates. It's almost certain that this person is not a teacher at all, and is just borrowing the placard, particularly since the plate number on the car does not match the plate number on the placard.

That could possibly be true. But they could have just moved there also. They could also be using another address for insurance purposes. A lot of people do that. Also I have a son that lives in NJ and if I use his car my placard is still legal.

"Using another address for insurance purposes" is called "insurance fraud".

Using a car whose license # is not listed on the placard you're using is not correct. If you're caught doing so, your placard is subject to confiscation.

HOLD ON everyone. In most cases DOE/teacher placards get tickets. The ONLY case where they don't is in a "No Parking Except Teachers 7am-4pm". However, I have even seen them get tickets in THAT zone when there is also an additional street cleaning sign (e.g. Mon & Thurs 9-1030am). Thus, teachers park their cars at 7am on a Monday all day and get ticketed for not moving it during street cleaning EVEN with their placard. This isn't even a school zone it is a "No Parking Anytime" sign. The traffic agent just might not have seen the placard yet or walked by it and will ticket him next time around. I would say that these permits hold about as much weight as a PBA, SBA, or DEA card.
