Outside the Metropolitan Museum on a Sunday morning, I watched this FDNY fellow browsing the racks of stuff for sale. He kept the engine running a full 14 minutes in this No Standing Zone (thus blocking three city buses, which had to drive around the vehicle). Apparently the three-minute idling law and no standing restrictions don't apply when FDNY goes shopping on the city's dime.

This officer contacted us to explain that he did not make a purchase while passing this vendor, but rather got caught up in some WTC illustrations that resonated so close to 9/11. A photograph of the officer has been removed from the primary photo.

also keep in mind that most fdny ems vehicles idle when parked so they are able to be driven when the driver gets back.. theres so much equipment in the ambulances running off the battery that if the engine is shut down for more then a few minutes the battery dies .. most ppl i know turn off the engine sporadically when parked as to not choke the nearby public with diesel fumes

FYI- Emergency vehicles are absolutely EXEMPT from idling laws. Glad it was quiet enough in this area for this guy to have time to shop!
