HEY STEVE, THE LOCATION YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS LADDER 25, AND HAS BEEN SINCE YOUR GRANDPA WAS KNEE HIGH TO A GRASSHOPPER. SINCE YOU'RE A PROPONENT OF NOTICING SUCH GLARINGLY OBVIOUS ERRORS OL' STEVE-O, MAYBE YOU'LL TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT WHAT YOU SO ERRONIOUSLY POINTED OUT AS "EMPTY SPACE AT CURB" IN IT'S OWN NEAT LITTLE RED CAPTIONED BOX...

WHAT YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN CORRECT NOTICE OF IS: THE YELLOW "NO STANDING" PAINTED CURB WHICH WAS PLACED THERE BY THE REQUEST OF THE NYPD TMD/TCD AND THE MANAGEMENT OF THE SAID "FOR-PAY" PARKING GARAGE WHICH BY THE WAY YOU HAVE SO ELOQUENTLY POINTED OUT STEVEY! THE CURB WAS PAINTED THIS WAY BY REQUEST OF THE NYPD TMD TO GIVE THE MOTORISTS WHO ARE DEPARTING THE GARAGE AT LEAST A "SEVEN TO TEN FOOT FIELD OF VIEW/CLEARANCE IN EITHER DIRECTION AS TO ALLEVIATE CONGESTION AS WELL AS AVOID COLLISION WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC."

SINCE YOU ARE SO WELL INFORMED AS TO THE PARKING SITUATION AROUND THERE..MAY BE YOU'LL ALSO NOTICE ONE SUPER OBVIOUS PROBLEM AS WELL...HEY STEVE, THE LIEUTENANT OF THE STATION'S RESPONSE TRUCK IS SITTING IN THE STREET BECAUSE THE SUPER OLD LANDMARK FIRE-HOUSE ONLY HAS ROOM FOR THE LADDER!!!

BEFORE YOU RETORT, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO SEE THE NAMES OF THE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LESS THAN ANGELIC SOULS WHOM HAVE DEPARTED THIS LIFE IN THE LINE OF DUTY.

When you walk past the Firehouse and you notice this same car or others with a FDNY ACTIVE Fire-Fighter plaque in the window, simply walk to the Firehouse and look at the bronze memorial plaque of the members who from January 1, 1901 until today have honorably gave their own lives TO SAVE YOURS!!!!

Matthew Barnes, Firefighter, Ladder 25
John Collins, Firefighter, Ladder 25
Kenneth Kumpel, Firefighter, Ladder 25 (Posthumously PROMOTED to Fire Marshal)
Joseph Rivelli Jr., Firefighter, Ladder 25
Paul Ruback, Firefighter, Ladder 25

I've seen the plaque and I am aware of and grateful for their sacrifice. Now, to the point: why should firefighters be allowed to park on the sidewalk? Because of the sacrifices they make in fighting fires? That doesn't make sense to me. The two things just aren't connected.

Most people use public transportation to get to work, explain to me why firefighters are different. And don't tell me it's because they are "angelic souls."

And as far as blocking the view of cars emerging from underground parking garages are concerned, if you have to block the view do it on the north side of the street, not on the south side where the construction shed compounds the problem. The vehicles parked in this post are within the 7 to 10 foot zone and blocking the view of the garage traffic, casing a serious safety hazard:

From your answer Steve you have no clue on their hours. They usually work 3 days on 4 days off. Alternating the weeks. You also point to the pay for parking. Like I've said in other posts raise the taxes to build parking lots for the FDNY,NYPD,COURT OFFICERS,USPS and you won't have this problem. But you would probably cry about that too. They are out there risking their lives for your safety and ALL YOU PEOPLE DO IS COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PARKING. This web site is getting pathetic. From the look of the picture there is plenty of room to get by without any one being in danger.

Drag,

If it's 3 days on, 4 off then they have even less reason than a daily commuter would have to drive to work, because they are commuting less. Your premise seems to be that city employees must be provided with free parking at their workplace, wehther we open the sidewalks to them or build them parking garagaes. What is the basis of that premise? As I have commented repeatedly on this site, in the case of city employees required to work unpredicatble overtime I would favor reimbursements for taxi/car service or other perks deisgned to address that specific issue. that's what private sector workers get and city workers shoudl get it too. But to the extent you are leaving to or from work at a predictable time each day, why not use mass transit, car pools, or some other commuting method other than driving your car into the city where you know you will have to park on the sidewalk?

So what are you saying Alias and Steve, because FDNY has made sacrifices and has a risky job they are entitled to break the law? Any other laws, orjust parking? What about the guy I work with who just returned from a tough duty with the military, can he break laws too?

Steve, you say "in the case of city employees required to work unpredicatble overtime I would favor reimbursements for taxi/car service or other perks deisgned to address that specific issue. that's what private sector workers get and city workers shoudl get it too."

So let me get this straight? You'd rather have the city waste TONS of tax money refunding all sorts of strange and expensive taxi bills (not to mention possible corruption probelms with false billing), then to let city employees park for free near their places of business (only mildly disturbing the neighborhood around them)?

You go on to say "But to the extent you are leaving to or from work at a predictable time each day, why not use mass transit, car pools, or some other commuting method other than driving your car into the city where you know you will have to park on the sidewalk?"

Mass transit does not run predictibly enough for many non-office city workers. Tours end at strange times, overtime happens unpredictably, and have you ever tried taking mass transit at off hours from the city to outside the city locations? It's not always easy or even doable.
