This is in the SEZ for the 13th precinct. This SEZ, like most in this city, is WAY too small to hold all the vehicles it needs too.
Like I've said before, lets move the sidewalk in to half it's current size, make the entire block angle parking only, and make both sides NYPD and FDNY only (which I think it already is). This should make everyone happy. It would still leave room for pedestrians, and add valuable "legal" parking spaces to the SEZ.
While doing this for all precincts would be expensive, I feel that it is infact a very fair compromise for both the City and private citizens.
What is your solution then, aside from having everyone use mass transportation? Get rid of "No Standing Except Trucks" and meters on 3rd Avenue--which is still a two-way street thereby leaving two lanes of traffic--and replacing them with "No Standing: Except Police Vehicles?" Then, the businesses lose money because trucks can't make deliveries as efficiently and customers can't park at meters as efficiently. Make an argument for 2nd avenue and it's the same deal. Also, if NYPD placard vehicles don't angle park, there is going to be much less room for all of those vehicles. Then, they, in fact, spill over onto 2nd and 3rd avenues, and 21st between 3rd and Lex, creating even more of an issue with you guys because then they certainly won't get tickets for paying the meters or being in a Truck zone. Seriously, you can take a picture of all 30 cars parked on the sidewalk on this block. If you had the time I'm sure there would be thousands and thousands of violations on this site. But at least tell me for each one of your posts what a potential solution is. I mean these are cars from the 13th Precinct parked on the block of the 13th precinct. Remember this is not a Bronx South Detective parking on A and 14th with his Infiniti.
Law, now you're just being greedy. You don't want a fair compromise, you just want to bitch that the NYPD is wrong wrong wrong. Either come up with a valid solution, like I presented (it's not perfect, but I'm trying), or just admit that this is an anti-NYPD site with no real other perpose.
You say: "I would rather the cops at this precinct obey the law than squeeze pedestrians into less and less space." Everyone has to compormise, this can't be all one-way. And if the city did what I suggested then the cops would no longer be breaking the law. It's called being fair.
It is not anti-cop to insist that cops follow the laws they are paid by the taxpayers to uphold and are absolutely NOT permitted to break. Yeah, maybe a solution is far off and extremely difficult to achieve, but that does not mean under any circumstances that an acceptable short term solution is to just break the laws you don't think work until they fix them. These rules inconvenience everyone, from those of us (certainly NOT just the nypd and fdny) who risk their lives or well beings to do their jobs to snotty jobless kids who drive their dad's benz. We're all in the same basket, a gun and a badge do not get you out of that 'all men are created equal' business.
Saint,I do not say this site is anti-cop because your asking cops to park correctly.
I say it is anticop because the video claims that the NYPD is responsible for 28% of incorrect meter parking. It also says that the NYPD single handedly is responsible for 46% of abuse, even though it goes on to say that the #1 offender (54%) for fake permits is Court Officers.
Keeping all this in mind, of the 439 violations posted on this site, 232 are NYPD. That is 52.8% NYPD. The next highest is Court officers (31) with a wopping 7.06%. Obviously this site is biased toward the NYPD, and that is why I say it is anti-cop.
This site has stated numerous times that it's collective posts do not represent the exact statistical totals of violations in this city, that's what the study the video refers to was for. Many times it has been stated that a user skipped several vehicles because they actually do have places to be, or passes a spot taken every day but only snaps it once. We document what we see when we can when we have time for it.
You only show a small representation of the actual problem. Agreed.
Posters pass up many cars for many reasons. Agreed.
But here's the problem, that validates my claim. That the pics on here are HEAVILY skeewed AGAINST the NYPD. The ones posters do manage to find time for, time and time again, are NYPD.
Mabey if posters were more vigilant and they posted EVERY CAR parked illegally, then we would see the exact statistical represention of each particular agency. And I can guarantee you that NYPD would NOT be 52.8% of that.
(Not to mention we could also see how many cars are civilian owned that park illegally and don't get ticketed. Many days I walk to the corner store and see cars double parked for 2-3 minutes while the owner is in the same store, and they don't get a ticket because there is no cop around. Isn't this just as wrong as the permit holder that puts the permit in the window to go do the same thing?)
That's our point. We're not the people who get PAID to do this as their JOB. We are voluntarily doing what we have time for because those who ARE getting paid to enforce these rules just aren't bothering. I can guarantee most of the fraudulent permits on this site aren't even used by law enforcement personnel, but by their friends or just people who take advantage of easily broken laws. Civilians break the law all the time, 'tis true. It is also true that said civilians tend to receive tickets at a staggeringly higher rate than those with either good permits in incorrect locations, or simply bad permits. We saw that happening a lot and logically figured it shouldn't happen anymore. If you're fire and brimstone about another issue, then by all means start a movement focusing on improving it. The goal here is not punishment for laws broken, it is obedience of them in the first place to increase the standard of living in this place.
The police don't get "paid" to write tickets, the police get paid to provide you with security, and safety. Sometimes that takes the form of writting a parking ticket, but cops are not on every corner, and every minute of the day.
As far as them not being "bothered" to enforce traffic rules, that is because they are busy taking reports, catching criminals, solving crimes, making arrests, and dealing with emotionally disturbed people.
Maybe they should do less of the above, and just sit back, and write some parking tickets. This city will be MUCH safer then!
"The police don't get "paid" to write tickets, the police get paid to provide you with security, and safety. Sometimes that takes the form of writting a parking ticket, but cops are not on every corner, and every minute of the day."
I sometimes wonder where the heck they are? I mean, if I can spot violations and crimes ahappening whey can't they?
"As far as them not being "bothered" to enforce traffic rules, that is because they are busy taking reports, catching criminals, solving crimes, making arrests, and dealing with emotionally disturbed people."
Sure they are. 24//7/365. Right. They are never just driving around ignoring violations because they don't want to enforce the law (for whatever reason) at that time.
"Maybe they should do less of the above, and just sit back, and write some parking tickets. This city will be MUCH safer then!"
When they aren't taking reports, catching criminals, solving crimes, making arrests, and dealing with emotionally disturbed people (which woudl be about 75% of the time, then they should be writing tickets. There is no reason the police should ever ignore the law. They should do their job all the time while on duty without complaint or bias. Yet they don't. Why? Because many of them feel that they are too good, too entitled, and above the law.
Krupke, you say "They should do their job all the time while on duty without complaint or bias."
Are you kidding me?
Idk what you do for a living, but do you ever take a break while at work? Do you work EVERY MINUTE of your time at work? Do you ever slow down just a little while doing some mundane task?
No, of course not. Because you're SUPER EMPLOYEE! Man, your boss must LOVE you.
I can't believe this web site. All you people do is complain about oh the police parked this way. Oh the police parked that way. Oh the police are blocking the sidewalk. Oh they are doing this or they are doing that. If they were out there doing nothing except giving parking tickets you would be complaining about that too. People stop complaining it's not going to change. Just remember if the police officer is parked illegally then you will have a legal spot to park.
dragon -- We would love it if the police gave out more tickets. If you read this [http://nyc.uncivilservants.org/the_problem], you would know that, and our other policy aims with this site.
Additionally, as stated here [http://nyc.uncivilservants.org/the_campaign], this site's purpose is not primarily to serve as forum for what you call "complaining". Every posting that checks out will be fed into this process:
FOIL Inquiry Process
For each agency employing parking permit abusers, a legal team will use the New York Freedom of Information Law ("FOIL") to find out how permits are issued, which permits are valid, when permits may be properly used, who supervises the permit abusers and whether there is a formal complaint procedure. Complaints will then be submitted formally (if possible) and will also be forwarded to agency heads and managers of permit abusers. Results of these efforts will be made available from time to time on the website.
Parking Placard Information Bill
Good governance legislation has been introduced in the City Council that would require the Mayor’s Management Report to detail the number of parking placards issued by every agency in the City every year. This legislation is a very significant first step to bring transparency to a process that permits many fraudulent and fake permits to be used with impunity on New York City's streets. Despite our best efforts to develop precise totals for permits issued in New York City (including NYPD Restricted and Teacher permits, which are used indiscriminately throughout the city without regard to the limitations on them), we can only provide rough estimates. A modern American city concerned with transparency and good governance should expect nothing less that an honest count of parking permits.
