Pedestraisn have to navigate cars ont he sidewalk here, everyday. I'm not sure whether a wheelchair could get through. And, of course, there is a pay lot right there.
The firefighters ought to have first dibs on all the legal parking spaces on this small half-block, and should be prevented from parking on the sidewalk or in the bike lane opposite the scene pictured in the photo.

This is in the SEZ for that firehouse. This parking zone like most in the city, is WAY too small to hold all the vehicles it needs too.
Like I've said before, lets move the sidewalk in to half it's current size, make the entire block angle parking, and make this whole side of the street FDNY only. This should make everyone happy. It would still leave room for pedestrians, and add valuable "legal" parking spaces for the Firefighters.
While doing this for all firehouses would be expensive, I feel that it is infact a very fair compromise for both the City and private citizens.

Its not an invalid permit Steve!!! It is a safety hazard!!! His/Her permit has nothing to do with it.

Actually guys, I think we should credit Steve this time, guys. I think we can all agree that parking on the sidewalk creates a pain in the ass situation. 14FeetAway, while we are always on the same side, I think we can at least give Steve some credit for the statement: "The firefighters ought to have first dibs on all the legal parking spaces on this small half-block." It is about time that a post included rationale for a SOLUTION to the problem. One that is both logical and agreeable by all. Just create the spaces for FD and they won't park on the sidewalk.

Will, I agree... But here's the problem, they already HAVE spaces (look at the sign hanging on the pole). They need MORE. That is why I said they need to change the parking on the block, to add more physical spaces.
Also, the guys on this site will then claim that all the permits used are illegal (because they are not city issued). How else do these Firefigters prove they are legally occupying the space assigned to them? No one has answered this for me yet.

I'm not the one that labelled the post "invalid permit," the site does so, in this case incorrectly. It is a safety hazard. I don't think narrowing the sidewalk is the answer. If someone's ox has to be gored here, it should be those parking for free on the street or the firefighters, who have not bargained for nor received free parking as part of their compensation--not the pedestrians.

Absolutely, 14FeetAway, just create more spaces. Believe me, I have already stressed my grievances with the "Invalid" "Illegal" "Fake Permit" "Safety Hazard" designations.
