A Streetslog tipster snapped this photo yesterday afternoon. Note the Starsky & Hutch-style siren on the dashboard of the SUV hanging off the back of that tow truck. The photographer reports that NYPD tow trucks have been racking up the hours in December clearing the streets of Chinatown, and as you can see in the photo above, they are finally "towing their own".
When we last reported on the 5th precinct's parking situation two weeks ago, placard abusers were filling up the empty parking spots as quickly as the tow trucks could clear them out. Now, the tipster claims that over 90% of placarded vehicles have been removed from Chinatown's clogged streets. Ho ho ho!
[a tipster sent uncivilservants.org this:]
This month the 5th Pct towed cars on at least six separate days, 3 times during the first week of December, and this week for another 3 days. The 5th Pct has posted paper No Permit Parking signs [see photo, on right side], and backs these signs up with towing! I asked a couple officers from the 5th Pct about this increased towing activity, including Dep. Insp. Gin Yee himself, and they told me this was routine police work. Are the rest of the local precincts in NYC listening?

Question, are they towing all NYPD permits, or are the 5th Pct SEZ permits ok? This is afterall in the 5th, and thats what SEZ permits are for, right? I would appriciate it if enyone in the know could fill me in.

Chinatown is in a D.O.T. designated No Permit Area. As you can see, there is a posted "No Permit Parking" sign - "Tow Away Zone" and the car was towed because of a Posted Sign Violation, just as many cars have been towed in Chinatown this past month - at least 6 days of towing! (btw - this does not apply to handicapped permits). The cars that are towed are generally government sector commuters with NYPD placards, although there have been some Court Officer permitted cars that were towed also. The placards are either the colored type or the plain white "xeroxed" type.

Let me just say that we have no idea whose vehicle this is. All I see is a red tear drop light on the dash. I don't even see a placard. If you zoom in on the picture, you can make out a piece of paper that doesn't even really look like a plaque.

Bklyncop, you've been making those threats since this site came online. Nothing's changed. I don't think your "guarantee" as to what all cops are going to do is worth much. But even if your forecast was completely accurate, I could live just fine with it.

BicyclesOnly: I wish the NYPD would ticket every bicycle rider that runs a red light or runs a stop sign. You are also supposed to follow the law of the road.

Parting is such sweet sorrow.
