USPS Parking Abusers' Days Are Numbered

Observed by BicyclesOnly on Mon, Dec 17 2007

As of March 1, "spoof" permits such as those issued by Planetarium Station for their 80-odd employees are subject to summonses, towing, and "further prosecution":

Let's be real. The police are not going to enforce any laws against police. Any agency that is made up to enforce laws against the police will be so unpopular and most likely bullied into submission in no time.

Hey, I'm all for this, good luck, but even with these changes, your website will be as busy as it ever was!

Krupke, the statement "the police are not going to enforce any laws against the police" is a ridiculous exaggeration. If you mean the police are not going to enforce any *parking* laws against the police," then explain to me what is going on in this post: http://nyc.uncivilservants.org/post/index/3486 . And I can't see why you would endorse police thuggery against agencies set up to ensure that the police follow the law, although no one is talking about setting up a separate "agency." Read the press release again.

Looks like it is on the side of the post office. If it is they are allowed to park there.

Dragonman -- only if there is a rider below the sign. If there is no mention of Post Office employees, then the sign means exactly that -- "No Standing Anytime". The only exception in this case would be emergency vehicles in an emergency.

Just because there have been teh occasional selective enforcement day on specific areas of town does not mean that police will be enforcing these new permit laws everywhere. Hopefully in Manhattan below 86th street the new special permit enforcement unit will do it's job. In the outer-boroughs I believe it will rarely occur. Take a look out by the 78th or 70th precincts, the parking is atrocious! Most likely all that will happen is the police will enforce the permit abuse by the USPS, court clerks, and other city employees that are not NYPD or FDNY. I highly doubt the police will enforce the law on their own. They regularly ignore enough violations and quality of life crimes by ordinary citizens that this will be just too much paper work, too much agravation and may splinter the trust that these NYC agencies have between each other.

Um, BicyclesOnly here's what teh press release says

"Third, the NYPD will create a new enforcement unit to ensure compliance and agencies will develop enforcement procedures to prevent the abuse of placards."

So yeah, it seems they will be setting up a separate "agency."

#5, waxing poetic about "splinter[ing] the trust" among the illegal parkers and those who let them do it can't make shit smell like a rose. I don't doubt, however, that enforcement will differ in manhattan as compared to less congested outer borough areas. That what the police do, and what they should do--target limited law enforcement resources to where they are most needed. #6, there is a difference between a "unit" and an "agency," back to civics class for you. And I like Will look forward to March with anticipation . . .
