I didn't check for permits, but at PS 161 in Harlem on Convent Ave., these school staff park on the sidewalk every day; as with anything free and unrestricted, there's more cars parked on the sidewalk now than last spring. Another school 2 blocks south on Convent has zero cars parked on the sidewalk; I never see it there.

The only thing the comments about the other school proves is that this school does not have enough parking for it's needs, while other schools do.
Again, look at how wide this sidewalk is. A perfect solution would be to cut the sidewalk to half it's size, make the entire block angle parking only, and also Teachers only during school hours.
This would still leave enough room for pedestrians, while also providing extra parking for teachers during school hours, and parking for residents of the neighborhood after school hours.

I agree. There is at least 8 feet of pedestrian space for people to get by.

You guys are making a lot of assumptions. It's as likely as not that some of these cars have nothing to do with the school, its just opportunistic parking by area residents who have learned that parking rules aren't enforced near the school. It also seems likely to me that these sidewalk parkers could have found a spot within a few blocks, but they have just gotten in the habit of not budgeting time to look for a spot and driving straight to the sidewalk spot because they know they can get away with it.
One assumption that does seem warranted is that the majority of people arriving to this school arrive on foot. Why would it make sense to take away sidewalk space away to encourage driving to this location? Why crowd the kids into minimum space of 8' ?

Your right, it could very well be opportinistic area residents too. I doubt it, but you're right, it could be. However, that is why I said a new study should be done, and new clearly signed AND enforced parking area should be made. This would provide both parking for the teachers, and stop bad parking by anyone who feels "opportunistic".
Also, everyone on here assumes that pedestrians don't know how to walk, and will automatically crash into ANYTHING that is on a sidewalk, creating a safety hazard. That just is not so. People will, beleive it or not, walk around things. So, while making a sidewalk smaller may be a small inconvinience, it is NOT the end of the world, and kids and other walkers will learn to walk around objects, and deal with a smaller sidewalk (especially if this is built correctly, with curbs, lines, etc... and not just a poor re-pave job).
