It's not a matter of jealousy. When firefighters park illegally with union placards, you get commenters demanding that poster contribute money to the firefighters association because of how impoverished firefighters are. Here's an example: http://nyc.uncivilservants.org/post/index/1574#comments . Its fair to point out that someone who spends $50K on a car can afford to pay for a garage.

Well chances are that he is not a FF. I know plenty of people who get placards through someone they know in various unions or agencies.

Firefaighters' placards are supplied by their union. The way I understand it, they are entitled to a placard for every vehicle registered at their household, due to the possiblity that they may have to use ANY of those cars to get to work in an emergency, or in case of auto repairs. This means that in one family, you may have 4 or more placards- Mommy, Daddy, Daughter and Son and then some.
