School Bus Drops Kids Off in Street Because Curb Clogged with Teachers and Cops

Observed by BicyclesOnly on Wed, Jan 09 2008

As I walked down this street I saw the bus let the kids off in the middle of street. When I got to the front door of the school, I found the numerous vehicles parked right at the front door of the school parked in the "No Parking School Days 7-4 pm" sporting DoE and NYPD placards. Among them was the car with an NYPD placard the photo and info for which is in the non-public portions of this post. This officer was not parked in an SEZ.

Admin, "No Parking 7-4 School Days" should be added to the drop-down menu of signs.

This happens every day in NYC. Where have you been? Not just infront of schools, but also homes, both for pick up and drop off. I understand that it is not the best way to do things, but it's a part of life.

I understand that holding up traffic for a few minutes is a pain for everyone, but it's for the safety of the kids. This is why I think driving around a school bus is WAY worse then the bus just double parking for a minute to load/unload kids.

A "No Parking 7am - 4pm School Days" signage option has been added, and the relevant posts have been updated.

I have no quarrel with the state law requiring traffic in BOTH directiosn to stop when a school bus is loading and unloading. And it is unrealistic to prohibit parking in a school bus-sized area in front of every residence on the chance that kids who live there may have to use the bus. But when DoT works with a school to designate a large number of curbside spots next to a school for Board of Ed placard parking, while designating the spaces right in front of the school's front door as "no parking," but the teachers and cops park there anyway because its a convenient place to park, and that means all the kids have to disembark in the middle of the road, well, that's what this post is about. You think that is an arrangment we should accept as "part of life"?

I have never seen a school bus pull to the curb to drop kids off, even if there is space. they always stop in the middle of the street to drop the rugrats off so vehicles can not get by and run them over.
