NY Times: New York, True to Mayor’s Promise, Slashes City Parking Permits

Reported by lawandorder on Thu, May 01 2008

The Police Department gave up about 20,000 of the city’s coveted parking placards. The Fire Department lost more than 2,000. The mayor’s office gave up 163.

Those were some of the most striking numbers in a long-awaited inventory that the city released on Wednesday, showing that it has reduced the number of free-parking placards distributed to law enforcement agencies and other city departments by nearly a third. The permits give city employees free street parking privileges at their workplace or around the city while on official business.

The cuts are likely to please drivers who see the placards as an easily abused perk that makes the already daunting task of finding a parking spot that much harder, especially in neighborhoods like Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, where city offices are concentrated.

The Police Department began eliminating placards in March, and most other city agencies are now following suit. When officials finish handing out new placards in the coming days, they will have cut the number of permits to 54,891 from 80,770, according to Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler. The reduction exceeds a pledge by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to trim the number of placards by at least 20 percent.

In September, an additional 63,390 placards used by the Education Department, primarily to allow teachers to park on streets around schools, will also be subject to similar cuts, Mr. Skyler said.

At that point, Mr. Skyler said, a total of 144,160 placards identified in the city inventory will have been reduced to about 105,000, although the number could go even lower.

The NYPD illegally cut a large number of the permits. To get the number as big as they could, they denied everyone for the smallest problems. The sign up period for a new permit was as small as a week in certain precincts, if you missed the period, you were out of luck. Regardless of if you were on vacation, home sick, or some other reason.

Even if you got the permit application in on time, that didn't mean you'd get one. IAB flat out denied cops who had P.O. Boxes listed on their drivers licences. This is NOT illegal. The DMV asks you for your Mailing Address and that is the one on your drivers licence, your real residence address is filed in the DMV computers. Many cops do this as a safety issue. But IAB said "No permit for you."

How do these cops who got denied permits park their vehicles in the SEZ which is clearly marked "Police Vehicles Only"? Some have already been ticketed by traffic and sanitation, all for legally parking their car in the SEZ, while at work.

The current number of cops in the NYPD is apx 37,000. This is exactly how many permits there should be. Not one more, not one less. If you are currently employed, and have a car, you should have a permit. End of story.

The people who complain on this web site don't see it that way 14 feet. When the crime rate goes up because you guys are looking for a legal spot to park they only have them selfs to blame.

Read past the headlines, This is a accounting trick afoot here. So, some people who really deserve one like the Auxiliary Police didn't get it meanwhile every chief, supervisor, and community board and hatzolah member got one.

Its one big shell game, and if believe everything that is written i have a bridge to sell you over the east river.
