Ladder 20 firefighters—despite having a garage AND parking lot—frequently double- and triple-park in front of, across from, and north of their firehouse at 253 Lafayette Street. Problem is most private vehicles have not got the necessary FDNY medical center permits to park here. Traffic on this block is frequently congested due to this consistent abuse.

Uniformed Firefighters Association permits are invalid in NYC.
See the menu tab "Is This Permit Legal" for more information.

Moreover, the No Standing sign clearly reads: "FDNY Medical Center only permits". Neither of these vehicles displayed a FDNY Medical Center permit.

I am a FDNY firefighter and I work in the building. There is an ongoing problem on this block that starts with the city. The block is signed Medical Center Permits only 8am to 6pm. The FDNY Medical center moved to 9 Metrotech in 1996. The building is presently used by Ladder 20, Division 1 , CSU and the Fire Marshals. The signs nedd to be changed to reflect the new command and he 24 hour use of the building. Additionally many merchants and residents on the block park illegally making parking for people that work in the building tougher. Specifically the pay lot across the street parks his monthly rentals on the street to make more room for day customers in his lot. Additionally firefighters from other commands and sometimes people with fake or borrowed FDNY placards park on the block for persoanl business in SOHO. I will bring this site to the attention of the chief in Division 1 for immediate action.

Thanks for speaking to the chief! DOT can change the signage for the entire block of Lafayette if conditions so warrant. Your chief or support staff probably knows who to contact to get the signage changed. You are also right about the pay lot across the street—but he's a small fry compared to abusers who tarnish the FDNY's good reputation by using fake or borrowed permits.
As I mentioned yesterday in my other post, I do of course support all of you in your work. And next time my apartment is on fire, I'll use the fire extinguisher under my sink because I've caused you guys grief.

There is also an additional problem of civilan employees of the FDNY CSU using placards and parking their personal vehicles on the street. They are not authorized to park their personal vehicles there period. They do not get detailed to other parts of the city like firefighters do.
