As we reported last week [http://www.streetsblog.org/2009/01/27/city-council-hard-at-work-on-pro-parking-bills/], Maria Baez and a handful of other City Council members want to issue free parking permits to every public school teacher in New York City. As the system presently employs some 95,000 full-time teachers, in addition to 18,000 part-time teachers and paraprofessionals, Intro 894 [http://webdocs.nyccouncil.info/textfiles/Int%200894-2008.htm?CFID=2724537&CFTOKEN=73921266] would encourage hundreds of thousands of car trips per year just as the city is making efforts to reduce driving by government employees by reining in parking placard issues.
The bill got its first hearing from Community Board 12 in Washington Heights last night, where it was overwhelmingly rejected by the board's transportation committee.
"Most members of the committee did not want to bring even more cars into the neighborhood," Chair Mark Levine told Streetsblog.
If the Baez bill isn't going over in car-friendly Upper Manhattan [http://www.streetsblog.org/2008/09/09/cb12-committee-hot-for-parking-cautious-on-livable-streets/], that may not bode well for its success elsewhere. But given that Alan Gerson, who presides over one of the most congested districts of the city, has signed on as an early co-sponsor, we'd be foolish to write it off.

This is but one district that is especially devoid of teachers living within it. Wait till it gets to teacher friendly community boards. Trust me when I say that the other districts are onboard and this bill will come to pass. With constutuents that number in the 100K how ccould this not pass. Fortunately, most teachers and other city workers will get this much deserved perk. Thank you once more Mrs. Baez for your efforts.

1st of all teacher plaques are meant to distinguish them from other cars in and around schools they can park in nyc dept. of education spots and official vehicle spots not sidewalks hydrants and driveways so they have to have these plaques cause if they park in dept. of education spots without a plaque they will get ticketed so get your hopes up they will pass these plaques it's common sense

This is an awesome idea and Councilwoman Baez should be heralded for her efforts. Inside word is that this bill has incredible support. I predict it will pass and every teacher will receive a parking permit as before. This does not bode well for the Bloomberg administration. Once her bill passes it will open the door for other city workers to have their parking perks restored. Finally a bill that actually shelters the city worker. I can't wait till they get all their permits so I can given a much deserved free pass on parking violations.

The teachers should all have parking permits. As well as all NYPD,FDNY, and all other agencies that serve us.
