Driver parks in front of his apartment building overnight and during the day. Van blocked traffic during nearby visit from fire department's trucks. Van blocks street cleaners in the morning. Driver of van clearly perceives himself as above the law. "No Parking Anytime" sign is attached to pole directly in front of van, to the right in the picture (van is parked directly under sign).

Where are the signs that says no parking?

He didn't block anything when a fire truck came down the block. If the street was that narrow, the DOT would have labeled it No Standing or No Stopping or No Standing Fire Zone. So please don't tell me that he was blocking anything in a No Parking 8-6. Emergency vehicles are slowed down by cyclists, pedestrians, moron drivers, and idiot double parked vehicles.

You are kind of a know-it-all for someone who wasn't there. I submitted photographic proof to this site but they only posted this picture. The van was parked where you see it in this photo. The firetruck was parked on the other side of the street. The traffic could not get through because of the van. I don't know what the exact signage for the entire block is, but the van is parked directly under the 'no parking anytime" sign. So, if I may respond in a similar tone, shut your yap.
Also, the van was parked overnight in the same spot last night/this morning, I took another picture, this time with the sign in it.

wait... you can see in this picture that the traffic is blocked. The van and the firetruck are across from each other. The yellow cab behind the van can't get through. So look before you leap, huh?

Wait... Look at the angle you took the picture. I bet if you took it from the street side the cab could get thru.

I'm a little unsure about what's occurring here. It's very simple. I was there, I saw the traffic backed up to west 3rd, and I saw the reason, which was: Firetrucks were on parked on the east side of the street and this van was parked, overnight, directly under a no parking anytime sign, on the west side. The cars could not get through the middle.

I know the SOHO/NOHO area extremely well and I can say that regardless of parked vehicles, legal or not, when FDNY is doing anything on the secondary streets, no vehicles can get by, as well as the fact that NO vehicle should be driving thru an active fire/rescue scene.

What we all can agree on is that using an official parking permit to park illegally in front of your apartment building, overnight and when you are off duty, is an abuse of authority and a form of corruption. Either you're sworn to uphold the law, or you aren't. And this guy isn't even a cop but some low level political flunkie.
