Bklyncop1,
No one's been banned from the site. We do however very quickly delete posts that are inappropriate, and eventually delete users who don't stop posting inappropriate material (I'm not saying that you did, I wasn't moderating over the weekend). We also delete aggressive, offensive, and inappropriate comments.
Also, because this site is about illegal permit parking, we delete posts like this one, which doesn't have anything to do with the site.
I'll amend what I said above:
"Also, because this site is about illegal permit parking, we delete posts like this one, which doesn't have anything to do with the site."
I meant that this post will be deleted because it doesn't have a photo of permit parking issues.
Its not about that, all I'm saying is that maybe, just maybe there is reason why certain cars are parked illegally. if you check your threads you will see that I dont agree with parking at bus stops or hydrants and handicapped parking is a great reason to draw and quarter someone. But to take pictures of cops cars with the licence plate visable for every skell to see is dangerous.
p.s bklyncop goes not let me log in anymore what happened?
I asked that they only post permit numbers and identifiers and not the plates of personal vehicles. Someone on this site already ran a plate and pulled up an officer's unpaid fines. That is one step from having the officer's home address.
Musha is probably talking about posts where unpaid fine information is posted or included in the comments. That information is freely avaiable to all from nyc.gov at address below. Try it yourself. It has absolutely nothing to do with people's addresses.
IMHO, we need to have a board to discuss issues thematically, in addition to comments on parking posts.
I think this is a valuable conversation, but we need to have it in a different context. (Especially since this post should be deleted for being off-topic.)
Musha-- please elaborate, it was my understanding that LE could keep their personal data from being disclosed when plates are pulled.
haven't used it since i had to pay my alternate side parking summons last year... i lost track of the day of the week,,, go figure
anyhow, i still disagree with the posting of plates of personal vehicles... permit numbers i have no problem with (and I am quite sure IAB is enjoying the permit numbers too). You do not need the plate number for "the job" to ID and discipline "the cop".
No LE cant have personal data pulled, I wish. Its dangerous... A skell( bad guy) could know someone on the job and have them run the plates not for tickets but for our home address. maybe if you guys edited the pictures and blacked out the plate # I would be able to stop posting non-topic material on this site.
If folks can quickly and easily get home addresses from plates, wouldn't a bad guy mad at a cop from a particular precinct be able to:
1) Lurk outside the precinct.
2) Observe the cop in question getting into his car at the end of a shift(whether parked on the sidewalk or not).
3) Jot the plate number down.
4) Run the plate.
Alternatively, someone out to just "get a cop, any cop" could just walk down a row of (legally or illegally parked) personal vehicles with NYPD placards and jot down every plate.
If it's that easy, then it's step #4 that is seriously messed up, and I'll join you in raising an unholy stink about it.
Salguod... the NYPD is about 20 years behind everything. If you run my plate, you get my name and home address. No special flag that it was even run.
And yes, a board for discussion would be invaluable.
I don't agree with everything on this site, but I respect you right to do so, and admire the desire to make this city better for all.
I just feel you could accomplish the same goals without posting plate numbers. Its bad enough I have people I have arrested recognizing and approaching me on vacation in Atlantic City (among other places). I have no desire to have one find my doorstep or my family.
Posting plate numbers makes it easier for someone with a grudge to find a random cop. Say I park legally according to my dept, but the signs say no parking M-F 8-6... with no rider. We are all told it is PD parking and a self enforcement zone, but the unit works out of an office building. It is not a marked PD facility.
How soon before my car is posted for all to see? I am following parking directions as given to me by the NYPD, but according to this website I can have my plate number plastered for all to see.
This website is going to attract not only those that want to improve the traffic and parking conditions of NYC, but people that are looking for an excuse to harass and possible put into danger, cops.
FYI, in the initial version of the site, we emphasized plate numbers in the manner of platewire.com (check it out). Before launching we realized that there *is* a serious possible threat if the plate #s are text searchable -- for instance, if one of the cars we find isn't a personal car but is an undercover car.
But it just seems very bulky and laborious for the bad guys to use our system when they can be much more focused and efficient in other ways.
And if the threat depends on having an "insider," it would seem that the picture on our site is almost beside the point.
Well, if I am legally parked (according to my dept) but not according to this site, and my plate is published, what actual recourse do I have?
The permit will ID me to the dept so they can take actions as the deem necessary (and as this site is being viewed by IAB the effect you will have on my dept will be large).
The plate is not needed for the city to ID me or any other accused offender.
I'm not one to abuse my parking privileges (and that is all they are, they are not a RIGHT to park anywhere), but if I see my car on this site, with my plate number posted, parked in a spot the NYPD told me I could and should park in, I'm going to be just a wee bit upset.

Posting the plates of cars you feel are causing quality of life issues that belong to memebers of LE can potentially put that person, or worse that persons FAMILY, in danger. If you want to run around and snap away with your cell phones, knock yourself out. But be responsible and do not post the actual plate. Think about it.....what if someone started a web site outing people who take pics of parked cars with permits, and someone then posted the photo's and addresses of you guys. Not cool.
PS - I fully expect this to be deleted with my other posts, CENSURED, because you don't agree with it.
Heh, be that as it may, I have little choice but to follow their directive on this. Wish I still has the memorandum that specifically showed us where we could and could not park. I could take a city bus almost 3 stops to get from one of the indicated blocks to work, and even that street isn't labeled as PD parking, just NP M-f 10-6 like all the others.
Oiseau, have issues with the NYPD? did we ticket you for riding on the sidewalk? whats your beef? would you want any of the cops that you bash so quickly on this site to know where you live? I didnt think so. as for identifying our plates, have you gone to DMV lately? Lots of perps friends work there.
As I said, the plates are not necessary for this site to accomplish its goals.
The goals of this site are to make the city safer by correcting parking conditions that put others at risk. It is an admirable goal.
The goal of this site should not be to put the safety of officers or their families at risk, which you have a potential to do when you put our plate numbers on this site (not only on the pics, but in some cases highlighted captions)
Not everyone is law abiding. Not everyone comes to this site because they are seeking to make this city safer for those that drive, bike, and walk her streets.
Some people will come here to find more reasons to dislike cops. Others will already have such a dislike, and may be looking for ways to take action against a random cop or (if the cop is lucky) his personal property.

Everyone - especially cops, should have a "beef" with people breaking the law, no matter what it is.
I have the utmost respect for cops, and absolutely none for lawbreakers.
If it's possible for the average citizen to get a person's home address from a plate, then it shouldn't be on the site, hand down.
"as for identifying our plates, have you gone to DMV lately? Lots of perps friends work there."
Then you should go after them; that's a felony, no? The average citizen doesn't know a crooked employee of the DMV.
I don't think this approach is very constructive. These guys are sincerely upset. We're trying to understand their concerns and address them without making the site impossible to use or creating an enormous amount of work.
(FYI, musha & others, I've got some ideas on this that I'm going to pass along internally.)
If you've got a legitimate problem with the NYPD, there are many better ways of dealing with it than this. This is not a general purpose cop-bashing site, and it undermines the work we're doing if you turn it into one.
Also, Oiseau and others -- bear in mind that the solution to this problem ultimately lies in the hands of the NYPD. It depends on them changing policies, communicating through the ranks, and empowering those who would like to solve the problem but are unable to do it because of others' sense of tradition, inertia and a sense of entitlement.
Randomly lashing out is not going to help make this happen.
Salguod, much thanks. I think you (or one of your staff) knows who I am on another site. Feel free to inbox me there again if you need anything from my end.
This is a work in progress. I expect it to have growing pains. I don't expect changes over nite. I do sincerely appreciate you listening to our concerns.
Some might think we are a paranoid bunch. I'm just trying to keep work separate from personal and family life... we are not firefighters and loved when we enter the lives of those we interact with while working. We arrest parents' children, children's parents, siblings, friends. Few of those that we interact with on these levels will ever like us.
Law abiding citizen's get parking summonses and moving violations from us, usually for an offense they had no idea they committed. Hard to make many friends when you cost the working man money.
Many have an axe to grind with us... which is why we are concerned about keeping the line between work and our personal lives (and personal identifyers).
Thanks again for acknowledging our concerns.
Best of luck with accomplishing your goals... they are admirable, and will benefit all (myself included).
Oiseau, the only repercussions you should be expecting from this should be from the NYPD to the officers involved. To accomplish that you need the permit number only.
Anyone (cop or otherwise) that does not believe that this site is being monitored on a daily basis by the Internal Affairs Bureau of the NYPD is either a fool (cop) or sadly mistaken (Oiseau and others).
This site is in the public eye. Trust me, many of your concerns will we addressed, sooner then later if I guess correctly.

If it so easy to find an officer's home address from the license plate. Then I would think that any officer would be a fool to identify a personal car as a cop's car. Is the safety of your spouse and kids worth free parking?
My suggestion to site administrators is to check with NYPD. If the security situation is really that poor, I would think NYPD would have some liability concrerns, and union should be pushing for a correction too.

People need only to have access to public records web sites to obtain DMV info. These sites can be obtained for as little as ten dollars a month. STOP BEING IRRESPONSIBLE.
See, I wasn't going to post how to use the info that gets posted to this site... I thought it was enough to inform people that it could be found easily, and posting officer's personal plates was not in anyones best interests.
If you have the initiative to find this site and post on it, you should be able to figure out fairly easily how to use some of the info on this site in an improper manner.
Frank, according to my dept where I park near my command is police parking. We got that from a 2 star chief. The signs say NP M-F 10-6. According to this site restricted plates can not park there, even though it is a self enforcement zone.
All the cops parking there believe they are parking legally as this is where they were told to park.
Would it be fair to post their plate numbers so they could possibly be used in an improper manner to ID these cops?
I'm not talking bus stops, hydrants, crosswalks, no standing, no stopping, etc, etc... this is where the dept told them they could legally park.
Guys, we're working on this. Because the site is user-driven, there's an element of getting people used to snapping the first picture without plates. We'll also be asking folks to black out plates before they post pictures.
And as anyone who has posted on the site knows, the 2nd and 3rd photos (which don't appear on the site) will have those details and allow for follow up behind the scenes.
We're changing the Add form to better elucidate the desire to keep plates off the site.

I would think a precinct placard already identifies the car as an officers car so this is a red herring.
Musha brings up a great point (among many)--self enforcement zones. It is very unclear where these start and stop, how they are determined, how they are signed (or how they should be signed) etc.
We'll be following up with every precinct C.O. in the city to get this information. There clearly shouldn't be so much contradictory information out there, and the DOT signs department actually moves pretty quickly when they know what they're supposed to do.
#31 The NYPD is a good 15-20 years behind every other dept. There isn't much in the way of security. I'm just trying to keep a poor situation from possibly getting worse when there is no need to post plate numbers to accomplish your goals.
As I said earlier, I understand this site is a work in progress, and I very much doubt the owners of this site foresaw this issue.
#35 I'd say get the precinct to have the DOT change those signs. Just because someone says something is legal does not mean it is, even if that person is a NYPD officer. The law is the law. Petition the DOT to change the signs so that the NYPD can park their personal cars there. I'm sure you guys have some pull with different agencies. Until then, obey the laws.
ES, you need to follow up with more then just precinct C.O.s... some units work out of office buildings and converted warehouses... each command generally has a self enforcement zone and I'm doubtful that every precinct C.O. (or anyone on their command staff) will know all in their confines.
You will be dealing with a large , lumbering beast that has yet to enter the 21st century. I wish you the best of luck.

If we photograph a placard even an expred one the plate is listed. Fact is anyone walking by sees the placard.
Meanwhile the mysterious self-enforcement zones like area 51 are hard to delinieate. Frankly I have tried to find anything that specifies anything about this parking privilege and found nothing.

Since Brooklyn cop feels parking is tight perhaps he should start a camnpaign to stop all parking enforcement city wide.
It is a self-serving effort and again made trivial for teh residents and the most important thing next to life itself for govt. workers. Give me a break.
efficent streets, Thats all we want. your eyes and ears on the street can take pictures all day long just edit out our plate numbers... they can snap hundreds of photos of the plaques in the window... I dont care... what I did notice on this site is a hatred for the NYPD... If you drive by any firehouse in the city or any school for that matter, all you see is cars parked "illegally", cars parked in school yards meant for kids to play in. Why is it that the NYPD has the most violations ? are we that easy of a target? If you read the papers, maybe that answer is easy... YES!!! I've never had a fireman, teacher, sanitation man, FBI agent, Court officer etc. come into a building with me while some craked up junkie is shooting out of a window at us. Myself and other cops that I know have gone into fires, counseled kids, stepped thru hazardous debris to get a job done.
I understand you all fell like we take advantage but look past the parking issue and look at the bright side...You would'nt be on this site without the NYPD protecting you'r lives and property.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS THE NYPD!!!
to the site admin.
if you read oiseau's profile you would understand why I wrote the comment about his tush. sorry for the language I was just quoting.
With much of the rest of the comment though, I don't feel that way. This site is not meant to single out any particular agency. The primary target of this site is law breaking, regardless of who does it.

Being a vet, sorry I don't go for that nonsense so try selling it to some draft dodger. That is a sorry excuse for an above the law attitude.
Here's an idea: stop parking illegaly and there won't be a photo of your license plate on this website!
It's that easy!

The solution to the problem falls in the lap of Hollywood Mike Bloomberg and no one else. He has to get out from under his desk and take real action and not play a stonewalling game of denial.
I pledge to black out any plate info on any future posts I make.

What's the big deal about posting something that's clearly visible on a city street? You park a car with the right permit in the windshield and you're identifying that car as belonging to a police officer. What's the difference if it's on this site too?

I am certainly willing to underplay the plates in the public photo but not about to black them out. If the management here wishes to black out plates that is up to them. The second and third pics must show placards and plates.
However as Frank Serpico points out, just park legally and there won't be a photo of your car on teh site.
I can tell you Mr Brooklyn cop that the parking abuse commited by the NYPD has done nothing for your credibilty and the people struggling to live and work in the community don't find the parking abuse amusing espcially when they are given no mercy for even minor infractions.
If you want to be worshopped try Mt Olympus, but my father was a cop and he put his pants on one leg at a time. You chose the profession and despite your gripes you are well paid, have good benefits and retire quite comfortably.
What you want is what you think you are entitled to at the expense of what the residents are entitled to.
#53-#54: I agree with you, I don't believe that plate info on this site is actually creating any security problems for anyone, but enough people are saying it with enough urgency/rationality that I'm willing to defer to them and not assume I know everything.
Where does this God Bless America stuff come from? If you love America so much - follow its laws and respect the people that live here. Besides, we pay your salary.
Jason,
News flash my friend... If you pay our salry as you put it...
1. I need a raise
2. send me a picture, I need to show my partner who signs our checks.
3. Your cheap....
4. Hey boss... can I have sunday off.
Reading how you refer to God And America as "stuff"... Dont refer to it.
I would be happy to pay more taxes so Police Officers get paid more - and I bet alot of poeple here would also.
Just becuase people don't like giant vehicles illegally parking all over their neighborhoods doesn't mean that they somehow hate cops or America.
I don't understand how a discussion about parking leads to a CAPS LOCK screaming statment saying godbless america and the nypd. Seems a little off topic and zealous - am I the only one?
You're welcome, bklncop1. And it's not without a cost. Because taking three photos so I can separate the license plate and the violation info and also get the placard triples the chances of my getting my ass kicked, as so many of your bretheren keep reminding me. And then I get called a coward and a sissy! You guys should make up your minds how you want to insult me.
Keep it on topic, please.
This isn't supposed to be a general blog!

this site is getting played out fast. just like critical mass this site will be corrupted from its original goal. transportation alt. always are right on track then all the loser critical mass people will ruin it by complaining about everything else. soon people will post illegal poultry sales.
For those that apparently don't know, the internet can be used to ID the owners of these plates. As I have stated earlier, I only use my restricted permit where my command has told me it is valid. That is apparently a NP M-F 10-6 with no rider attached. I don't want my personal info posted when I am following instructions as they were given to me.
Following the guidelines of this site my parking, and that of my whole command, is illegal. Self enforcement zone, so no tickets will be issued, but my plate on this site can make me a target.
I'm not looking to park on a hydrant, in a bus stop, in a crosswalk, etc. I'm looking to park where I've been designated to park w/o the worry that some individual with an axe to grind aganst police in general will see my plate on this site, ID me using the internet (easy enough) and now my name and address are in the hands of someone they shouldn't be.
Can they do this by walking up to my car, or any car on the street with a permit? Sure, but why do so, and risk being remembered for doing so, when someone with a legitimate purpose (the purpose of this site is legit) has already done the work for them.
I see a lot of anger directed at police on this site. Your anger at officers that abuse their parking privileges is legitimate. Understand that there are others that are angry at cops because we (police in general) have arrested them, their family members, their friends, fellow gang members... or even worse, we are perceived to be killers of members of their community. If you think there aren't people out there that would use information available to cause harm to me or my family you are mistaken. My issue is with making it so easy that they can get that information from the privacy of their own home.
I expect as this site matures the issues I and others have brought to light will be addressed.
For those that read my posts, thank you for your time. As for those that don't, well, you aren't reading this anyway ;)
Oiseau - just to be clear, is your problem with the vehicles of city employees being illegally park, thereby cause a hazard to pedestrians and motorists - or - do you just have an axe to grind with police in general?
Reading your posts I expect it is more the latter then the former.
Musha-
Well said on #72. And I agree that there is no need to post the license plate numbers of police officers.

just read on the other site that the marked police car bike lane violators are not going to be focused on in this site.
Those are the most dangerous to bicyclist,
if your not going to focus on them , how about posting a FAQ on how to snap a photo and send it to the proper authority for follow up? time and date of photo could be used to check whether the officers are doing official business or just stopping for a meal break, coffee run . i saw that the new police commissioner in Yonkers a ex nypd officer, jacked up the yonkers pd for double parking to get coffee.
bike lane blockers are the worse, they create a serious hazard. get the nypd to double park outside the bike lane, and at least we wont be in less jeopardy
#76 I think part of the problem is lack of understanding of the bike lane in general my bicyclists. Not organized bicyclists by any means, but in my travels throughout Manhattan I see way more bicyclist outside the bike lane then in. These are generally the same ones that don't wear helmets, and lack the proper lights when riding at nite.
I wish I knew the proper solution to the issue at hand in relation to bike lanes.
That being said, they should not be parked in, as it is the same as double parking... one is blocking a lane of traffic.
Why is it so difficult for civil servants, specifically cops, to comply with the traffic\parking regulations that they are sworn to uphold and respect?
Musha, if you read my bio you'll see that I could NEVER be anti-LE!! I see no problem with cops or any civil sevants parking ANYWHERE! so long as they do it within their working schedule.
My true concern is the few - VERY FEW - civil servants that abuse their parking privilegs to park their vehicles overnight while NOT on official business.
Please not that I have not, and have no intention, of ever posting a civil servants' tag on ANY web site!
Ronin, i pointed you to my previous post because i wanted you to see where an officer could believe he was legally parked, and members of this site would believe he was illegally parked and therefore post the vehicle's pic and plate.
I agree the abuse must be addressed.
I have used my restricted plate once to park my car over nite on a pump. Well, I think i put the permit on the dash. We all know that day well. I didn't care if i got a ticket or tow at that point.
I live in the same city I work in. Street Cleaning rules twice a week. Forgot to move my car 3 times in the last 2 years. Three tickets. Yes, all paid. I have no intention of ID'ing my car with my job where I live.
Those that abuse their permits deserve to be punished by the department. As has been stated before, the Internal Affairs Bureau closely follows this site. I am sure many officers have already had to answer to their abuse of their parking permit.

why does anyone care so much about how a car is parked,do you have nothing better to do.It seem's like most of the complaints come from people who have had everything handed to them and now that they moved into the city are appaled by such criminal behavior like parking to close to the crosswalk or the horrific crime of parking in a no standing zone. Why do I say that the people complaining must be new to NYC and/or have everything in life handed to them?Because a newbie thinks he can change NYC and someone who is spoiled has to justify a cause for doing nothing all day! If you want to make illegal parking your cause why don't you become traffic agent?
Musha, I don't believe the people of the city of NY care that a civil servant parks his\her POV illegaly now and then. It becomes a major concern when the practice becomes a "right".

TO BRKLYNCOP:
The NYPD did some research on illegal parking around the Security Zone in their Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). They hired an outfit to count illegal placard use in the Security Zone in Downtown Manhattan. They counted 1,200+ illegaly parked cars (illegal use of placards) in the 10-square block or so area near 1 Police Plaza on an average day. That's over 1.4-million parking violations committed by Police and Government employees since 9/11. Check the numbers yourself, read the DEIS. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO WAKE UP TO 1.4-million ILLEGAL PARKERS IN FRONT OF YOUR DOOR EVERYDAY FOR OVER FIVE YEARS!? LETS HAVE YOUR NYPD PEOPLE PARK IN FRONT OF YOUR BUILDING-YOUR BLOCK everyday 5+years. You would whistle a different tune.

TO BRKLYNCOP:
Illegal use of placards on parking meters costs NYC over $40,000,000. Let's stop illegal placard parking on parking meters, and give the money that NYC loses on parking meters to cops who know how to obey the law.
Ronin, my concern is that posters on this site don't make that differentiation... how can they know if the parking is an aberration or a habit? How can they tell if the parking is legit according to the dept if the signs don't indicate it as such?
That is why I made my point about showing plates on this site... much to their credit they are taking action to do what they can to minimize that occurrence.

For all the hard work we do, this is the way the people of Liberal NYC thank NYC's Finest. It does not shock me either. You should be happy to see a vehicle with an NYPD placard in the window regardless of how this vehicle may be parked. That may be the difference beteween you walking home and getting there safe because there is a police officer near by. Every last one of you libs takes this for granted. All you do is cry about one of the few things that you dont get to do. You think because you live in manhattan or park slope that you should have the same perks? This is one of the few perks that we as PO's have and you want to take that away too. What if all of us decided to turn our backs when you were getting the @#$% kicked out of you in the street. How would that make you feel. We are not here to break the Law. We are here to protect you, Joe Citizen, from the "scum of the earth". When we do this we risk our lives and are subjected to bodily harm. The least Joe Citizen should do is stop hating on the fact that we have this one "perk". If you want the same "perks", you should have taken the test.

How many municipal workers live more than a few miles from their employment and need to drive to work? This city would have a better future if we could get these municipal workers to take public transportation. The problem is the rents/home prices have skyrocketed so high they cant afford to live within a reasonable distance and must drive from all reaches of the tristate region.
What is the alternative? Raises for these people? Not reasonable! I suggest free ridership. We could use more armed law enforcement in the subways and buses and these subways and buses are going that way anyway.

Look, gentlemen, lets stop the b.s.
Many young people join the force for privledge.
To park anywhere, to carry a pistol,
to have authority they never had before.
It couldn't be the salary, it is so small, a person without ambition would want it.
All the talk about "I wan to help people" is just bull.

Ryan,
Hate to tell you most of the cops I know joined the department for the right reasons, namely to help the people of this city. What privledge are we getting? To park our vehicles on our station house block, whooptie freakin do!!! Most cops I know of live on Long Island or (less) upstate and if not for this job wouldn't come into the city often enough to worry about free parking. As far as "getting to carry a pistol" doing so is an awesome responsibility, it is not a game or a privledge. A pistol is a tool we use to, if god forbid nescessary, protect ourselves and the public (ie YOU) from harm. The reason we should/do have some parking privledges is because if the entire platoon is driving around the stationhouse looking for parking we cant be responding to you as you are getting your ass beat by some 300 lbs monster who just wanted the fancy fanny pack you were wearing. If you are late for work the boss has to wait an extra 10 minutes for his CHOCOMOCHALATTE from starbucks. If I'm late for work someone, MAYBE YOU OR A LOVED ONE COULD END UP DEAD.

The bottom line is, that cops are servants of the Law and should obey the law to the fullest extend. Cops can not bend the law the way they like it. You have to pay for your parking spaces like the rest of us. Don't forget, that you have your jobs because we pay your salary. Also for all cops, please watch the old movie" Judge Dread" with Stallone in it. It shows in it's own way what police is all about and should be.

The nonsense excuses for illegal parking are ridiculous. The legitamate placard allows for very liberal parking perks. I don't think it is to omuch to ask that invalid placard users be punished and legitamate placard holders abide by the limitations placed on placard use.
The residents of the city have rights and it is like it or not the community in which they live and pay taxes should not be subject to abuse by anyone.
The abuse is widespread and extends to all placard holders and thise with fraudulent placards and this site is an effort to set things straight.
None of the silly excuses we have hheard or the false heroics have anything to do with the core issue.

As a Cop on the force for 20 years I can say, that I have never abused my power. More to that, I personally Issue tickets to Illegally parked police and other government cars. We are here to protect citizen in all possible ways, it is simple as that.

I think perhaps we should reinstate the residency requirement.
Frank, I am happy to read your post. My father, a cop went to work on public transportation for most of his career. I consider what I see on the streets and the snide remars in defense of poor behavior an insult to the uniform.
I unfortunately have to agree with mesage #95 and I am well familiar with the last years inflated overtime to ballon the pension.

I think we are allowing the discussion to drift off the main issue this site is here to address. Let's stay focussed and not be sidetracked by silly spinning arguments.
No one is above the law.

Here's a thought -- the police have surveillance cameras throughout the city and photograph license plates of cars that allegedly run red lights. Invasion of privacy? How about if the camera is wrong? How about invading my privacy when I am simply walking along the street.
If you are out in public, you have NO EXPECTATION of privacy. That's the way it is. So if you want to park your car anywhere on a city street, anyone can come and take pictures or other info about it.
If you want privacy for your car, it's called a garage.
If you are parked illegally, then you should be punished like every other citizen.
2. Let's have more street parking for the uncivil servants.
3. Let's have enforcement of the law at all times for everyone.
4. Get rid of many parking meters. The police only write tickets for expired meters, not for feeding the meter. Plus meter parking is usually in an area where there is a high volume of trucks which usually have to double-park.
Frank, you don't read other's posts much I see, or ignore posts that don't fit your mindset. That being said, I'll repost this for you:
I only use my restricted permit where my command has told me it is valid.
Thanks frank - glad to see you are so understanding - another axe to grid I see.
Here I thought this site was to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic safety by addressing the improper use of parking permits by NYC Civil Servants. I had no idea the intention was to be an anti-cop site. Glad you corrected me.
My argument remains tho. My command's parking is as indicated, and I very much doubt anyone else in my command knows that according to THIS site, their parking will encourage certain people to post their plates on this site.
They were told by the dept this is where to legally park.

musha - if this is the case - all they need to do is change the sign to NP M-F 10-6 except for authorized vehicles, then put NYPD below that. There's lots of places like that in downtown Brooklyn for NYSJ - half the neighborhood is taken up by that. Why won't they do that for a much more emergency based department?
Musha, let the ICO know this site exists and that the force would appreciate it if he would get DOT to fix the sign. Except it would be a mistake to put the "Authorized Vehicles" rider on the sign. Then your spaces will be taken by the clerks, the retired parks department bureaucrats, and the hot dog ladies. It should say "except by NYPD permit."
#85- so let me get this straight? we feed the meters so we can give our self raises? Why dont i shoot myself and save the criminals any unnessary stress the court system might cause to them....
There will be more I just woke up... I'll be right back...
Frank Serpico, Great name... It figures you would be on this site. 2 questions.... Ready?
1. why do YOU get parking tickets? Does that mean you park illegally?
2. If the answer is yes... Are you bashing us out of jealousy?
p.s if a cop told you to park somewhere get his name and shield # and YES go to court and fight it.

Here is what needs to be done.
1. Parking permits should be used for emergency situations only.
2. Each precinct should have enough parking space for all employees.
3. If you park elsewhere using your permit it is illegal and you should get a ticket.
4. Police officers should be a role models on this Issue and not like some assholes
Frank
PO 1 NYP
Yes we should have enough parking but some commands have over 400 cops assigned. at any given time lets say there are 80 cops working.. The self enforcment zone just expanded.

I'd like to know where it says they are entitled to all this parking in the forst place. The whole thing sucks.
Folks,
Reminder, posts with threats, insults, swearing, etc. will be deleted.
Self-Enforcement Zones: We are FOILing
NYPD and DOT to get information on the zones. Musha is right--as wacky as it sounds, we've been told by a former city employee with extensive knowledge about permits that in many cases, self enforcement zones are not signed properly.
Clearly this is something that should be remedied and hopefully the collective energy of everyone on this site can be used toward that end. In any case, we'll make that a facet of the campaign.
Musha is right! s/he is parking in conformance with CO directve in a SEA.
The self enforcement zones (SEA) adjacent to every NYPD facility were established by the then Dept. of Traffic when civilians brgan performing traffic enforcement duties in 1960. The SEA's were to prevent summonsing of undercover and evidence vehicles parked near the precincts.
While there is usually designated parking with signage on the precinct block front, the SEA's usually go well beyond this block, and are NOT signed specifically for NYPD use.
The SEA's are documented on paper, command by command. perhaps somebody with access to these documents could provide them to the site administrator for posting.
Snooper
The argument that the cops are making against the publishing of license plate numbers is fallacious. The cops claim that perps with vendettas will see which cars belong to policemen and then take revenge against policemen.
But those same perps can walk down the street and see police placards in the windows of illegaly parked vehicles!
I would argue that most lowlife perps do not know how to use the computer or internet.
For the police to be completely safe from perp revenge perhaps they should not park their personal cars improperly and display placards IDENTIFYING them as police officers.
JJ, my problem is parking my car where my dept says is legal this site indicates it is illegal, and now my plate is posted for all to see.
Posting officers' plates gains this site nothing... action will be taken against the member of the service by the dept based upon the restricted permit number.
Yes, as I've stated before, any perp can walk down the street and right down officer's plates... posting officers' plates takes away the risk of them being confronted and remembered.
I'm trying to keep things from being too easy for those that may wish to cause an officer harm to get that info from the internet. No every dealer or gangbanger is a high school drop out and computer illiterate.
The true solution would be for the dept to do what many depts do across the country... make it so that a DMV check comes back showing the vehicle assigned to the police agency, and not an officer's home address. Being that the NYPD is 20 years behind most other agencies in the country, I don't expect that to happen.

The issue with the license plates being posted should be taken up with SOMEONE ELSE - if you don't want the public to be able to identify you, then this is the wrong forum to complain about it in. Being police officers as a few of you here have said, you should know to discuss this with YOUR BOSS to express your concern of your safety.
License plate numbers are public access and fair game.
I have more faith in my fellow man to look out for my safety then I do the NYC Police Dept. 15 years after they promised us we would be getting jobs over computer terminals in our patrol cars we are still waiting.
If this site can accomplish its goals without endangering officers' safety why not do so?
First, the photos taken around the precinct's are just funny.
If legal parking was provided for us we would use it.
Second, I believe as do most cops that most of the pictures put up on this site are done as a revenge tactic against law Enforcement.
Third, complete enforcement of this cities Traffic Regs.,in the long run, would just hurt the average citizen.
Honestly....ask yourself....is it because you dislike us? Or is because you want to make a difference/

I find it disconcerting the number of comments here that contend anyone posting has an "axe to grind" or some sort of "vendetta" for being "wronged" by the police.
I don't drive, so I could care less about available parking spots and I have never gotten a ticket.
I'm never even been stopped by a police officer, so I have no ulterior motive.
My only concern is the fire hydrant that is blocked in front of my apartment building >virtually every moment of every day< by someone with a police placard. If we learned anything from the Bronx apartment fire, it is that time is precious when responding to a fire. I shudder to think of the time that might be wasted getting that car moved or to hook up a hose around that car.

When there's a fire and a car is blocking the hydrant, FDNY will sometimes just run their hoses THROUGH the car. I've seen it. All the windows get broken (thoroughly, to prevent damage to hoses) and the hoses go in one window and then out the other side.
Hopefully that will happen one day to all the personal police vehicles parked in front of hyrdants around Lefrak City in Queens.
I never contended that anyone that posts to this site has an "axe to grind". There is, however, a vocal minority that obviously do have an "axe to grind".
Registered posters that have read my posts concerning the posting of the plates of officers' vehicles have been understanding for the most part... it is primarily anonymous posters to this thread and others like it that want the plates posted. Why is that? They aren't the ones posting pics to this site (you need to register to upload the pics).
As for the hose being passed thru a vehicle's windows, i also saw it once... the officers' concerned learned an important lesson... when you are the first unit on the scene at a fire, do no leave your patrol car unattended while blocking a hydrant... wish i had a pic of that... it was priceless

What do you people want STRICT ENFORCEMENT?? We can do that and believe me the public will not be happy about it. Just as we use our discretion when deciding not to summons an illegally parked vehicle, we use that same discretion when deciding whether or not to give a summons, make an arrest or just give a warning. If you think that all the parking rules should be enforced we can do that, but then of course we have to do the same with the vehicle and traffic law and the penal law, right? What does this mean to you? It means that instead of giving you a warning for running the red light or using your cellphone while driving you get a ticket!!! It means next time I respond to a location where your child has been stopped by a store owner for stealing a pack of gum, instead of a kick in the ass, he comes back to the station house and you gotta, depending on his/her age pick them up at the stationhouse or central booking. You want to be petty, we can be petty to. I can't count the number of times I've given "joe public" a break, so how about giving us a break? Think about it the next time you get stopped by the police!!!

Some people on this site have complained about self enforcement zones. Instead of parking between "Authorized Agency" signs when available and perhaps in a No Parking zone with a rider Mon-Fri 8-4 etc.... what we should do is have DOT change the signage on the block to "Authorized Agency" FOR THE WHOLE DAM BLOCK!!! Now you don't have to worry about us ruffians parking in the no parking sections, got it. Oh wait I just realized if we do that then the block loses viable legal parking spaces for the public and the only persons who could park on the block would be the ones with permits. You know what that sounds good to me!!! I think you should suggest it at the next community board meeting!

Yes do that. What it means is that the person who ran that red light or used their cellphone while driving won't next time!
It means that that child who stole that pack of gum won't next time!
So do your job 100%, 100% of the time and let's see exactly what this city looks like! I bet it will look a hell of lot more civil then it does today.

Oh give me a break, the firehouse on Lincoln Place and Washington Ave in Brooklyn has a whole parking lot for them to use and they rarely, if ever use it.
You can have the whole block, but you'll still park on the curb and anywhere else you damn please, just because that's the nature of the beast!

get over the "uncivilness" of us being able to park where and whenever we want... if god for bid something happens i have to be able to get to the scene as soon as possible hence why we have parking permits in t he first place
next time one of u post another picture up on this site remember who u call when u need help.. maybe that one second it takes us to get to our vehicles will be the life or death chance for u to survive.. THINK ABOUT IT.. Just Think...

Hey Efficient Street
You are censoring certain blogs that you do not agree with. Why not let the bloggers decide if it is within the scope of acceptance?
You are acting as a dictator on the site. You can delete postings, ban profiles and ban ip addresses. You have absolute power.
Why not exercise the greatest power. The power of doing nothing.
If they don't moderate this will get out of hand, and turn into cop bashing vs. cops. That is not the point of this site.
Most site have rules.
Here are the rules for this site:
Comments including threats, insults, and derogatory comments will be promptly removed
I think overall they are doing an admirable job moderating this site... although I have a feeling anonymous postings will either end or burn out the moderators ;)
It goes both ways... i was addressing someone i perceived to be an officer.
Threats, insults and derogatory comments have no place on this site and detracts from its purpose.

The site has made some valid points by providing the public with pictures of city employees parked illegally. It seems to me that the main issue is that these people believe that law enforcement officers are given favortism as far as being able to park where ever they want. It has turned into a shouting match that is going to remain unresolved because someone is trying to make a point. In reality, these issues should be addressed to our wonderful Mayor Bloomberg who is aware of the challenges that the average citizen faces everyday. These issues im sure are not on his top ten list. In fact, it's pure entertainment. People have more power than they they think, and they need to address these issues to the people whose voices are heard not ignored.
There are various admins here who monitor posts and delete posts/comments that are aggressive, offensive, threatening, harassing, etc.
You might be surprised how out of hand it got the night the site went up, and again on Saturday.
So yes, I will continue to edit those posts/comments.

I for one am all for universal enforcement - if the cops start ticketing every illegally parked car, every red light runner, and every litterbug, in exchange for ticketing each other for parking illegally, I really don't see the downside... Normal New Yorkers don't drive, and normal drivers are taking advantage of everyone else. When a private parking spot goes for over $250/mo in the city, every single curbside parking spot is just another example of ordinary New Yorkers losing public space so that entitled New Yorkers don't have to pay their own way - cops included. A better system would require every parked car to pay market rate, and if the NYPD feels it's necessary to provide parking at every precinct house, then the NYPD can build parking garages or rent space in existing lots, just like everyone else. Hell, if the City thinks cops should get free parking, let the City charge market rate for parking everywhere else, and use the proceeds to build lots for cops!

okay #1 if someone who is a 'SKEL' WHO police dont think are that smart anyway.. got on this site then went to the parking violations site and ran the plate to see how many unpaid parking tickets what makes u think that same smart 'SKEL' CANT JUST WALK AROUND AND RANDOMLY WRITE DOWN ALL THE CARS PARKED AT ALL THE PRECEINTS OR COURTS AND DO THE SAME THING.. MAYBE U SHOULD BE MAD @ THE TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS BUREAU FOR NOT REQUIRING MORE INFO BEFORE SHOWING UNPAID FINES.. #2 if you cant find parking @ your job do like the rest of us carpool or take public transportation or pay for it. #3 if u put a plaque in your car no matter where u park it is in the public view for anyone to view photograph write down the plate or anything . so i am not a cop but if i was i wouldnt even use those plaques if i was worried about a skel.. that is so smart that they can get your information from just a plate or a plaque card id#.. so in another words SPARE US THE BULL....seriously i have a sister who is a correction officer and a nephew who is a cop. my sister doesnt drive she commutes my nephew drives his unmarked car and parks it where ever he choses is it fair ??? nope is he working most of the time ??? yes... now if he gets a ticket who pays being that its a city car ??? we do!!!! and if he was using his own car and parked it reckless all the time i could complain to him all day. what makes him different from all the other officers on this site is that he will look @ me and understand my fustration and actually try to change his habits where as from the looks of the post from the cops on this site you guys are trying to justify something that isnt.. wrong is wrong and rules and regulations are for everyone just because your a cop doesnt mean i should have sympathy for u getting to work and u should have any more convince parking your personal car anymore than my doctor or lawyer or my accountant or me !!!! how do u expect someone to respect you when you are issuing a summons for the very same thing u dont follow.. and as for the cop with the fines he should be towed just like the rest of us.. i dont have the $680 any more than he does and i need my car as much as he does. and if i see a old lady getting mugged i would help her just as fast as u with your gun while i am just barehanded!!! so all that cops help jazz save it because i dont see any helping going on in the 113 th or the 105th !!!!!!!!!! all i see is people getting pulled over for window tint ... instead of worrying about someone putting a plate # of an illegally parked car on this site worry about being more helpfull in the streets and showing by example. you want people to follow the rules than u need to lead by example and follow them yourselves!! get off the cellphones while driving on duty !!! stop running the lights with no sirens and lights. to get back to the house to go home.. be respectfull and live your life according to the golden rule and maybe cops would get a fair shake !!! and for those who dont know the golden rule is TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED!!!! NOT TREAT PEOPLE ACCORDING TO THERE JOB STATUS "IF THEY ARE LAW ENFORCEMENT" SEATBELTS, CELLPHONES ILLEGAL PARKING ALL STACK UP IN THE SAME PLACE. HOW WOULD U FEEL IF U WERENT A COP U GET PULLED OVER FOR USING YOUR CELL PHONE GET A 100$ TICKET OR FOR PARKING ILLEGAL.. THEN 10 MINUTES LATER SEE A COP PARKED ILLEGALLY OR TALKING ON A CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING?? THAT WOULDNT PISS YOU OFF ? WELL MR AND MISS OFFICERS OF THE GREAT NYPD IT HAS PISSED OFF THE CITIZENS OF NY... AND IF THIS IS THE RECOURSE STOP TRYING TO MAKE EXCUSES AND MAKE ADJUSTMENTS...

Bklyncop1,
No one's been banned from the site.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:38 AM
I'll amend what I said above:
"Also, because this site is about illegal permit parking, we delete posts like this one, which doesn't have anything to do with the site."
I meant that this post will be deleted because it doesn't have a photo of permit parking issues.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:42 AM
Its not about that, all I'm saying is that maybe, just maybe there is reason why certain cars are parked illegally. if you check your threads you will see that I dont agree with parking at bus stops or hydrants and handicapped parking is a great reason to draw and quarter someone. But to take pictures of cops cars with the licence plate visable for every skell to see is dangerous.
p.s bklyncop goes not let me log in anymore what happened?

As I stated elsewhere... if we obey the rules of the site our views and concerns will be heard.
Making personal attacks only hurts ourselves.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:45 AM
I asked that they only post permit numbers and identifiers and not the plates of personal vehicles. Someone on this site already ran a plate and pulled up an officer's unpaid fines. That is one step from having the officer's home address.
Not cool.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:46 AM
Musha,
Please elaborate. The NYC Dept. of Finance ran a plate from this site?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:51 AM
Musha is probably talking about posts where unpaid fine information is posted or included in the comments. That information is freely avaiable to all from nyc.gov at address below. Try it yourself. It has absolutely nothing to do with people's addresses.
http://nycserv.nyc.gov/NYCServInquiry/NYCSERVMain
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:51 AM
you can run any plate from the nyc dept of finance website and find the outstanding fines. Our illustrious brother apparently has $680.
I used to do it in my old command to see if a GLA might have been towed or was a possible dump job. Just have to dig thru links off the city's website
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:52 AM
IMHO, we need to have a board to discuss issues thematically, in addition to comments on parking posts.
I think this is a valuable conversation, but we need to have it in a different context. (Especially since this post should be deleted for being off-topic.)
Musha-- please elaborate, it was my understanding that LE could keep their personal data from being disclosed when plates are pulled.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:56 AM
steve, thanks for the link
haven't used it since i had to pay my alternate side parking summons last year... i lost track of the day of the week,,, go figure
anyhow, i still disagree with the posting of plates of personal vehicles... permit numbers i have no problem with (and I am quite sure IAB is enjoying the permit numbers too). You do not need the plate number for "the job" to ID and discipline "the cop".
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:58 AM
No LE cant have personal data pulled, I wish. Its dangerous... A skell( bad guy) could know someone on the job and have them run the plates not for tickets but for our home address. maybe if you guys edited the pictures and blacked out the plate # I would be able to stop posting non-topic material on this site.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:01 PM
Musha--
If folks can quickly and easily get home addresses from plates, wouldn't a bad guy mad at a cop from a particular precinct be able to:
1) Lurk outside the precinct.
2) Observe the cop in question getting into his car at the end of a shift(whether parked on the sidewalk or not).
3) Jot the plate number down.
4) Run the plate.
Alternatively, someone out to just "get a cop, any cop" could just walk down a row of (legally or illegally parked) personal vehicles with NYPD placards and jot down every plate.
If it's that easy, then it's step #4 that is seriously messed up, and I'll join you in raising an unholy stink about it.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:01 PM
Salguod... the NYPD is about 20 years behind everything.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:07 PM
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:10 PM
musha i agree with you lets this site post all they want... BUT!!! STOP POSTING OUR PLATE #'S
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:10 PM
FYI, in the initial version of the site, we emphasized plate numbers in the manner of platewire.com (check it out). Before launching we realized that there *is* a serious possible threat if the plate #s are text searchable -- for instance, if one of the cars we find isn't a personal car but is an undercover car.
But it just seems very bulky and laborious for the bad guys to use our system when they can be much more focused and efficient in other ways.
And if the threat depends on having an "insider," it would seem that the picture on our site is almost beside the point.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:25 PM

Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:55 PM
Heh, be that as it may, I have little choice but to follow their directive on this. Wish I still has the memorandum that specifically showed us where we could and could not park. I could take a city bus almost 3 stops to get from one of the indicated blocks to work, and even that street isn't labeled as PD parking, just NP M-f 10-6 like all the others.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 12:58 PM
Oiseau, have issues with the NYPD? did we ticket you for riding on the sidewalk? whats your beef? would you want any of the cops that you bash so quickly on this site to know where you live? I didnt think so. as for identifying our plates, have you gone to DMV lately? Lots of perps friends work there.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:07 PM
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:14 PM
Everyone - especially cops, should have a "beef" with people breaking the law, no matter what it is.
I have the utmost respect for cops, and absolutely none for lawbreakers.
If it's possible for the average citizen to get a person's home address from a plate, then it shouldn't be on the site, hand down.
"as for identifying our plates, have you gone to DMV lately? Lots of perps friends work there."
Then you should go after them; that's a felony, no? The average citizen doesn't know a crooked employee of the DMV.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:15 PM
Oiseau--
I don't think this approach is very constructive.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:24 PM

Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:38 PM
Oiseau, the only repercussions you should be expecting from this should be from the NYPD to the officers involved. To accomplish that you need the permit number only.
Anyone (cop or otherwise) that does not believe that this site is being monitored on a daily basis by the Internal Affairs Bureau of the NYPD is either a fool (cop) or sadly mistaken (Oiseau and others).
This site is in the public eye. Trust me, many of your concerns will we addressed, sooner then later if I guess correctly.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:39 PM
If it so easy to find an officer's home address from the license plate. Then I would think that any officer would be a fool to identify a personal car as a cop's car. Is the safety of your spouse and kids worth free parking?
My suggestion to site administrators is to check with NYPD. If the security situation is really that poor, I would think NYPD would have some liability concrerns, and union should be pushing for a correction too.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:45 PM
People need only to have access to public records web sites to obtain DMV info. These sites can be obtained for as little as ten dollars a month. STOP BEING IRRESPONSIBLE.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:47 PM
Here's an idea: stop parking illegaly and there won't be a photo of your license plate on this website!
It's that easy!
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:48 PM
See, I wasn't going to post how to use the info that gets posted to this site... I thought it was enough to inform people that it could be found easily, and posting officer's personal plates was not in anyones best interests.
If you have the initiative to find this site and post on it, you should be able to figure out fairly easily how to use some of the info on this site in an improper manner.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:52 PM
Frank, according to my dept where I park near my command is police parking. We got that from a 2 star chief. The signs say NP M-F 10-6. According to this site restricted plates can not park there, even though it is a self enforcement zone.
All the cops parking there believe they are parking legally as this is where they were told to park.
Would it be fair to post their plate numbers so they could possibly be used in an improper manner to ID these cops?
I'm not talking bus stops, hydrants, crosswalks, no standing, no stopping, etc, etc... this is where the dept told them they could legally park.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:52 PM
Guys, we're working on this. Because the site is user-driven, there's an element of getting people used to snapping the first picture without plates. We'll also be asking folks to black out plates before they post pictures.
And as anyone who has posted on the site knows, the 2nd and 3rd photos (which don't appear on the site) will have those details and allow for follow up behind the scenes.
We're changing the Add form to better elucidate the desire to keep plates off the site.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:53 PM
I would think a precinct placard already identifies the car as an officers car so this is a red herring.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:54 PM
Musha brings up a great point (among many)--self enforcement zones. It is very unclear where these start and stop, how they are determined, how they are signed (or how they should be signed) etc.
We'll be following up with every precinct C.O. in the city to get this information. There clearly shouldn't be so much contradictory information out there, and the DOT signs department actually moves pretty quickly when they know what they're supposed to do.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:56 PM
#31 The NYPD is a good 15-20 years behind every other dept. There isn't much in the way of security. I'm just trying to keep a poor situation from possibly getting worse when there is no need to post plate numbers to accomplish your goals.
As I said earlier, I understand this site is a work in progress, and I very much doubt the owners of this site foresaw this issue.
I expect it will all get sorted out in time.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 01:59 PM
Musha-- pm'd you on the other site. Thanks again for your constructive criticism.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 02:00 PM
#35 I'd say get the precinct to have the DOT change those signs. Just because someone says something is legal does not mean it is, even if that person is a NYPD officer. The law is the law. Petition the DOT to change the signs so that the NYPD can park their personal cars there. I'm sure you guys have some pull with different agencies. Until then, obey the laws.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 02:01 PM
ES, you need to follow up with more then just precinct C.O.s... some units work out of office buildings and converted warehouses... each command generally has a self enforcement zone and I'm doubtful that every precinct C.O. (or anyone on their command staff) will know all in their confines.
You will be dealing with a large , lumbering beast that has yet to enter the 21st century. I wish you the best of luck.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 02:09 PM
If we photograph a placard even an expred one the plate is listed. Fact is anyone walking by sees the placard.
Meanwhile the mysterious self-enforcement zones like area 51 are hard to delinieate. Frankly I have tried to find anything that specifies anything about this parking privilege and found nothing.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 02:13 PM
Since Brooklyn cop feels parking is tight perhaps he should start a camnpaign to stop all parking enforcement city wide.
It is a self-serving effort and again made trivial for teh residents and the most important thing next to life itself for govt. workers. Give me a break.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 02:36 PM
efficent streets, Thats all we want. your eyes and ears on the street can take pictures all day long just edit out our plate numbers... they can snap hundreds of photos of the plaques in the window...

Bklyncop1,
Agreed with your last two lines.
With much of the rest of the comment though, I don't feel that way. This site is not meant to single out any particular agency. The primary target of this site is law breaking, regardless of who does it.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:03 PM
Being a vet, sorry I don't go for that nonsense so try selling it to some draft dodger. That is a sorry excuse for an above the law attitude.

The solution to the problem falls in the lap of Hollywood Mike Bloomberg and no one else. He has to get out from under his desk and take real action and not play a stonewalling game of denial.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:09 PM
I pledge to black out any plate info on any future posts I make.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:12 PM
What's the big deal about posting something that's clearly visible on a city street? You park a car with the right permit in the windshield and you're identifying that car as belonging to a police officer. What's the difference if it's on this site too?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:15 PM
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:16 PM
#53-#54: I agree with you, I don't believe that plate info on this site is actually creating any security problems for anyone, but enough people are saying it with enough urgency/rationality that I'm willing to defer to them and not assume I know everything.

1. I need a raise
2. send me a picture, I need to show my partner who signs our checks.
3. Your cheap....
4. Hey boss... can I have sunday off.
Reading how you refer to God And America as "stuff"... Dont refer to it.

dear brooklyn cop,
if parking within 5 feet of a hydrant is no big deal , then why does nypd ticket civilians that do it?
fair is fair.we all must abide by the same laws.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:47 PM
I would be happy to pay more taxes so Police Officers get paid more - and I bet alot of poeple here would also.
Just becuase people don't like giant vehicles illegally parking all over their neighborhoods doesn't mean that they somehow hate cops or America.
I don't understand how a discussion about parking leads to a CAPS LOCK screaming statment saying godbless america and the nypd. Seems a little off topic and zealous - am I the only one?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 03:54 PM
You're welcome, bklncop1. And it's not without a cost. Because taking three photos so I can separate the license plate and the violation info and also get the placard triples the chances of my getting my ass kicked, as so many of your bretheren keep reminding me. And then I get called a coward and a sissy! You guys should make up your minds how you want to insult me.

plate numbers should be blacked out. your site is informative but where exactly will it get you?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 07:23 PM
this site is getting played out fast. just like critical mass this site will be corrupted from its original goal. transportation alt. always are right on track then all the loser critical mass people will ruin it by complaining about everything else. soon people will post illegal poultry sales.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 07:43 PM
Steve, much thanks for understanding.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 07:52 PM
Oiseau - just to be clear, is your problem with the vehicles of city employees being illegally park, thereby cause a hazard to pedestrians and motorists - or - do you just have an axe to grind with police in general?
Reading your posts I expect it is more the latter then the former.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:16 PM
Musha-
Well said on #72. And I agree that there is no need to post the license plate numbers of police officers.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:22 PM
just read on the other site that the marked police car bike lane violators are not going to be focused on in this site.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:27 PM
ES - somehow i missed post #36 - much thanks - i have passed the word - thanks for understanding
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:33 PM
#76 I think part of the problem is lack of understanding of the bike lane in general my bicyclists. Not organized bicyclists by any means, but in my travels throughout Manhattan I see way more bicyclist outside the bike lane then in. These are generally the same ones that don't wear helmets, and lack the proper lights when riding at nite.
I wish I knew the proper solution to the issue at hand in relation to bike lanes.
That being said, they should not be parked in, as it is the same as double parking... one is blocking a lane of traffic.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:48 PM
If "you" don't want your tags posted, then don't put yourself in the position were there exists an opportunity where it may occur.
In other words, don't park your POV (Personally Owned Vehicle) in an illegal spot\area subject to public veiwing\scrutiny.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:52 PM
Robin, since you must have missed it in this long thread, I will point you to post #72
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 08:53 PM
Why is it so difficult for civil servants, specifically cops, to comply with the traffic\parking regulations that they are sworn to uphold and respect?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 09:09 PM
Musha, if you read my bio you'll see that I could NEVER be anti-LE!! I see no problem with cops or any civil sevants parking ANYWHERE! so long as they do it within their working schedule.
My true concern is the few - VERY FEW - civil servants that abuse their parking privilegs to park their vehicles overnight while NOT on official business.
Please not that I have not, and have no intention, of ever posting a civil servants' tag on ANY web site!
As such, however, this abuse must be addressed!
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 09:25 PM
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 09:43 PM
You will notice the Enforcement crackdown in lower manhattan has one flaw, NO NOVS FOR NYPD even if they are double parked.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 09:46 PM
The first permits to be revoked should be those of the out of state insurance frauds. No NYS plate, no permit, no parking!
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 10:01 PM
why does anyone care so much about how a car is parked,do you have nothing better to do.It seem's like most of the complaints come from people who have had everything handed to them and now that they moved into the city are appaled by such criminal behavior like parking to close to the crosswalk or the horrific crime of parking in a no standing zone. Why do I say that the people complaining must be new to NYC and/or have everything in life handed to them?Because a newbie thinks he can change NYC and someone who is spoiled has to justify a cause for doing nothing all day! If you want to make illegal parking your cause why don't you become traffic agent?
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 10:16 PM
Musha, I don't believe the people of the city of NY care that a civil servant parks his\her POV illegaly now and then. It becomes a major concern when the practice becomes a "right".
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 10:29 PM
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 10:32 PM
TO BRKLYNCOP:
Illegal use of placards on parking meters costs NYC over $40,000,000. Let's stop illegal placard parking on parking meters, and give the money that NYC loses on parking meters to cops who know how to obey the law.
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 10:53 PM
Ronin, my concern is that posters on this site don't make that differentiation... how can they know if the parking is an aberration or a habit? How can they tell if the parking is legit according to the dept if the signs don't indicate it as such?
That is why I made my point about showing plates on this site... much to their credit they are taking action to do what they can to minimize that occurrence.
#89 Would that getting us a raise would be so easy - only productivity givebacks count toward our raise as per the mayor, and a giveback is not a raise - but if it helps any I do like your idea ;)
Posted on Mon, Mar 19 2007 at 11:10 PM

March 20, 1007 Manhattan
Look, gentlemen, lets stop the b.s.
Many young people join the force for privledge.
To park anywhere, to carry a pistol,
to have authority they never had before.
It couldn't be the salary, it is so small, a person without ambition would want it.
All the talk about "I wan to help people" is just bull.
Ryan
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:32 AM
Ryan,
Hate to tell you most of the cops I know joined the department for the right reasons, namely to help the people of this city.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 09:02 AM

Here's an idea: stop parking illegaly and there won't be a photo of your license plate on this website!
It's that easy!
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 11:03 AM
Here's my solution to many problems.
1. Let's have "Resident Permit Parking"
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 11:05 AM
Frank, you don't read other's posts much I see, or ignore posts that don't fit your mindset. That being said, I'll repost this for you:
I only use my restricted permit where my command has told me it is valid.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 12:05 PM
Thanks frank - glad to see you are so understanding - another axe to grid I see.
Here I thought this site was to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic safety by addressing the improper use of parking permits by NYC Civil Servants. I had no idea the intention was to be an anti-cop site. Glad you corrected me.
My argument remains tho. My command's parking is as indicated, and I very much doubt anyone else in my command knows that according to THIS site, their parking will encourage certain people to post their plates on this site.
They were told by the dept this is where to legally park.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 12:10 PM
musha - if this is the case - all they need to do is change the sign to NP M-F 10-6 except for authorized vehicles, then put NYPD below that. There's lots of places like that in downtown Brooklyn for NYSJ - half the neighborhood is taken up by that. Why won't they do that for a much more emergency based department?
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:00 PM
Musha, let the ICO know this site exists and that the force would appreciate it if he would get DOT to fix the sign. Except it would be a mistake to put the "Authorized Vehicles" rider on the sign. Then your spaces will be taken by the clerks, the retired parks department bureaucrats, and the hot dog ladies. It should say "except by NYPD permit."
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:02 PM
#85- so let me get this straight? we feed the meters so we can give our self raises? Why dont i shoot myself and save the criminals any unnessary stress the court system might cause to them....
There will be more I just woke up... I'll be right back...
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:08 PM
Can I say to the judge when I get my next parking ticket, "Well, when I asked a cop who was driving by, they said it was OK to park here"?
I think not.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:44 PM
Frank Serpico, Great name... It figures you would be on this site. 2 questions.... Ready?
1. why do YOU get parking tickets? Does that mean you park illegally?
2. If the answer is yes... Are you bashing us out of jealousy?
p.s if a cop told you to park somewhere get his name and shield # and YES go to court and fight it.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 01:51 PM
Here is what needs to be done.
1. Parking permits should be used for emergency situations only.
2. Each precinct should have enough parking space for all employees.
3. If you park elsewhere using your permit it is illegal and you should get a ticket.
4. Police officers should be a role models on this Issue and not like some assholes

Yes we should have enough parking but some commands have over 400 cops assigned. at any given time lets say there are 80 cops working.. The self enforcment zone just expanded.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 02:41 PM
I'd like to know where it says they are entitled to all this parking in the forst place. The whole thing sucks.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 03:05 PM
Folks,
Reminder, posts with threats, insults, swearing, etc. will be deleted.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 03:16 PM
Well, I haven't got a parking ticket in years.
Maybe I should just make up my own permit. Seems like anything could work from "Hot Dog Lady" to "Auxillary Police Dog On Duty"
Maybe I'll just stick a yellow magnetic ribbon on the back of my car and stick my VFW card in the window.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 03:51 PM

Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 07:03 PM
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 08:30 PM
politics aside this issue will never change.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 10:01 PM
The issue with the license plates being posted should be taken up with SOMEONE ELSE - if you don't want the public to be able to identify you, then this is the wrong forum to complain about it in. Being police officers as a few of you here have said, you should know to discuss this with YOUR BOSS to express your concern of your safety.
License plate numbers are public access and fair game.
Posted on Tue, Mar 20 2007 at 10:18 PM
I have more faith in my fellow man to look out for my safety then I do the NYC Police Dept. 15 years after they promised us we would be getting jobs over computer terminals in our patrol cars we are still waiting.
If this site can accomplish its goals without endangering officers' safety why not do so?
Posted on Wed, Mar 21 2007 at 08:40 AM

Posted on Wed, Mar 21 2007 at 10:38 AM
When there's a fire and a car is blocking the hydrant, FDNY will sometimes just run their hoses THROUGH the car. I've seen it. All the windows get broken (thoroughly, to prevent damage to hoses) and the hoses go in one window and then out the other side.
Hopefully that will happen one day to all the personal police vehicles parked in front of hyrdants around Lefrak City in Queens.
Posted on Wed, Mar 21 2007 at 11:15 AM

Posted on Wed, Mar 21 2007 at 04:29 PM

Try it, what is it too much paper work?

Oh give me a break, the firehouse on Lincoln Place and Washington Ave in Brooklyn has a whole parking lot for them to use and they rarely, if ever use it.
You can have the whole block, but you'll still park on the curb and anywhere else you damn please, just because that's the nature of the beast!

i agree with with My fellow law enforcer.. to whoever has a problem...
we unlike u are "on call" 24-7 when u are out haven fun with ur families or frnds we are out protecting ur rights and safety
get over the "uncivilness" of us being able to park where and whenever we want... if god for bid something happens i have to be able to get to the scene as soon as possible hence why we have parking permits in t he first place
next time one of u post another picture up on this site remember who u call when u need help.. maybe that one second it takes us to get to our vehicles will be the life or death chance for u to survive..

This isn't a blog, nor a ranting site.
