Green Market violated traffic/parking laws

Observed by devilsadvocate on Tue, Mar 20 2007

As usual the biased left views of T.A. show again. Why delete my posts of this flagrant violation of the traffic regs? I challenge you to leave this up and let the visitors to the site decide if this is appropriate. I am sure the commentary will play out.

Here we see the "green market" on the sidewalk in Columbus Park at the Civic Center in Brooklyn, right outside Borough Hall. The vendors have permits to sell their goods and wares, BUT NOT TO PARK ON THE SIDEWALK!
They are blocking ingress and egress to the subway and pedestrian traffic down Cadman Plaza and THEY DO HAVE GOVERNMENT ISSUED PERMITS! There is NO difference between this and a cop parking on the same sidewalk. The only difference I've seen is the cops are usually a bit more courteous and leave room for people to walk.

Clearly somebody in charge of this site is in favor of this market because it is "green" and keeps removing my pics public view.

MATT, what are you afraid of some bad publicity for your friends?? Talk about hypocrisy!

fine, devilsadvocate, there are many minor infractions. tell the flower guy to get his truck off the plaza.

but the agency list on the right side of this web site shows that the nypd is committing about 85% of them.

and why should the flower guy move when marty markowitz's entire staff parks on the plaza every day and their office sits direction on top of about eight subway lines and every bus line in brooklyn.

Thumb_50

well, we've seen posts of food vendors illegally parked... some with homemade permits, some without... where the line is, i don't know.... the "hot dog ladies" hand printed sign was priceless tho ;)

If the hot dog and coffee ladies are fair game and are still posted then so is the green market.
Leave it up or you have lost all credibilty!

AHHHHH, its very apparent. When a liberal farmer's market comes and sells you all that goodness, it sure seems like your opinions on them are much more tame.

Remember 1 thing, when you are in trouble, you call 911. Not the truck that is selling all your peace loving organic crap.

Folks,
This site is about enforcement of permit parking.

I've removed posts of the various food vendors, because they don't fit the profile of the site.

DevilsAdvocate, the posts were only removed from the public view--but not deleted. We'll figure out how to follow up with them.

The bikes will come off too. Bike enforcement happens all the time. In 2005 there were over 45,000 citations given out to cyclists, according to Inspector McCarthy's testimony before City Council (Critical Mass tickets were under 1,000 in the same year, so that isn't a significant portion).

Eff Street, THESE FOLKS HAVE GOVENMENT ISSUED PERMITS! This is my point! Abuse at all levels of government (and vegetables)

D.A.
Please post the permits (in 2nd and 3rd photos).
We can't do anything with them without the permit and licence plate numbers.

The previous posts were not deleted. Every single piece of data on this site is kept, but without permit details, we can't do anything.

Same with the food vendors. That's the job of the PD.

thanks.

Without permit details you can't do anything? Even if he showed permit details what could you do?

With all this complaining, aren;t you missing the point? Are you trying to make it easier for more cars to park in the city? If you made it more difficule for green market people to park their trucks, maybe we won't have these great breaths of fresh air in an overcrowded city. You have serously got your priorities out of whack for complaining about this one... the fewer cars around, the better... its the environment stupid!

I think it is fine when the green market people setup at a public space. To call this a safety hazard is a bit silly, since the green market vehicles all enjoy the same exception so that we can all enjoy the green market. Why not focus on true moral hazards, rather than these so-called safety hazards. The real problem with cops parking at hydrants is that they ticket others for doing the same. I drive a small moving truck (17') and parking in a hydrant is far less dangerous than say, double parking. The alternative of course is just silly: to never park at a hydrant would mean parking many, many blocks away from the location of the delivery. In that case movers (and other delivery people) would have to add hours to their scheduled deliveries and city commerce would slow to a crawl. Think about this next time those ups guys are late with your package, or when you yourself have to move into a new apartment. Think about how irrational it would be to oppose ALL hydrant parking...

I don't think the green market truck is a civil servant.

Everyone who breaks the law surrounding these permits should be ticketed. Cop or not. The problem is when issuers of tickets start making exceptions based on who, why, where, and how. Leave that up to the parking referee whose job it is to make those distinctions.

The major problem, is that these cops have made the city safer for everyone and now people, especially out-of-towners are moving into my city. Everyone born and raised in NYC should be issued a resident permit and everyone else should have to pay to park in NYC.

Devil's advocate makes a good point: "My point is there are many many minor infractions that are overlooked everyday!"

So what he's saying is: the parking permit abuse being committed by the police isn't hypocritical, because the police are doing an equally poor job of enforcement across the board for all types of parking infractions, not just the parking infractions they themselves flagrantly commit, because they are also failing to ticket other violators such as these hippies you see here.

Terrific idea 19. That will solve many problems -- first, no one will be able to drive because all of the roads would be cluttered with cars permitted to park wherever they wanted. Wonderful.

I also take exception that it was only the cops that made the city safer. There are a wide array of factors that play into making a city safe and a desirable place to live. That's not to say that police don't deserve credit, but to imply that they should be rewarded for their work with license to break the law is absurd.

Bravo, Devil's Advocate! The real problem is that these heavy trucks parked on sidewalks at Greenmarkets eventually cause significant damage to the pavement. (All those two bit tort lawyers salvate at the mouth when they see broken sidewalks.) But to shatter any illusions, they are not permitted to do so from what I know. The problem is that the umbrella organization for the greenmarkets are so extremely arrogant and self righteous that no one has the backbone to stand up to them. (the people at TA are rank amatuers by comparison.)

you guys are just a bunch of nothing else better to do guys than taking picture cars. stop worrying about what the civil servants are doing with their illegal parkings and start worrying about the war and other things. Whoever created this site needs to get a life. And for those who takes picture of cars, stop being a cry baby....

efficient streets,

this site is not about permit parking.........

the true cause of TA is they are ALL ANTI-CAR.....whether one is parked legally or illegally......it doesn't matter.....

this organization would like to have NO CARS anywhere in the city, so then they could ride about with even further RECKLESS ABANDON with their bicycles....

Already, 100% of TA and critical mass riders are guilty of violating traffic laws......this was evident by devilsadvocate taken pictures of cyclists constantly blowing through red light on a busy intersection....of course, those pictures were removed....

How about if we make all cyclists get licenses and insurance????? that would be a tremendous revenue raiser for the city........

Aggressive drivers....no problem....they deserve whatever they get if they endanger pedestrians, cyclists or other motorists..........

A few people parking in no standing zones, that aren't endangering pedestrian or other traffic, where NO ONE would be allowed to park ANYWAY does not seem to be a big deal.......

Fire Hydrant parking and bus stop parking......no problem with enforcement there either........

#15, "great breaths of fresh air in an overcrowded city"??
What great breaths would those be? Diesel fumes? There is nothing green about this market!

The reason for this post:

The police and traffic enforcement agents all overlook many infractions each and everyday. Green markets, doubleparked unloading trucks, trucks parking in bike lanes to unload, commercial vehicles parked in loading/unloading zones, news vans in bus stops, bicyclists blowing through red lights, going against the flow of traffic, riding on the sidewalk, chaining bikes to trees, etc. etc. etc.

My point, and i've stated it before is not to counter the abuses of the permit holders for the mere fact of countering, but to show that in a city of 8 million people, every minor infraction cannot be prosecuted. The fact that a police car parks by a fire hydrant and the cop goes into a store no more than 30 feet away for lunch is indeed petty, as a matter of fact is a ridiculous argument as the officer is there, at a moments notice, to move his vehicle.

I have no sympathy for flagrant violators causing real safety issues but lets get real, they appear to be a minority. I've been travelling to Europe for the past 36 years and I am still amazed when I see a bicyclist stop for a red light, give way to a pedestrian, and follow the rules of the road. I am equally impressed when peds. actually cross at crosswalks and wait for signals.
There is no common courtesy here in the Big Apple, realize it and move on people, we have trans fats to fight!

Thank you NYPD and God bless each and everyone of you. As a mother, wife and daughter of NYPD I will ask him who has no sin to cast the first stone. These critics don't believe in God nor the United States of America.

27, if it were my job to enforce the laws, I wouldn't take such a passive role in my job. If police officers and other civil servants are role models for the rest of us, then let them follow the laws of the land like the rest of us. All anyone is asking is that civil servants obey the laws/rules surrounding their permits.

Ultimately, everyone should follow the law (including green market vendors!), but the question here is that who polices the civil servants -- the people who have plenty of power? Clearly the answer is no one. In fact, it looks like people like yourself think that civil servants and the police have a right to be above the law. I wholeheartedly disagree.

I don't have anything against civil servants of any kind -- I just have a thing against law-breakers who get away with it.

As for belief in God and the USA? Your logic is AWESOME!!

Why should I be a role model for you? Thats why we have parents, teachers, etc. If you thought civil servants to be role models, you'd push your kids to become a cop, figherfighter, dmv employee. I have a sneaking suspicion this is not the case. Stop your bull, its too apparent.

I DON'T think you should be a role model. I think you should obey the laws like everyone else. If people want to hold you up your prefession as a role model, good for them. I'm simply responding to the people who talk about civil servants as role models.

Clarification: it's fine by me if civil servants have parking permits. What's wrong is breaking the law and using the permit as cover to do so. What's wrong is using the fact that the laws aren't enforced equally as an excuse for continuing illegal behavior. What's wrong is that you're trying to defend bad behavior under the cover of "Why should I be a role model for you?"; you live in this country, you have to obey the laws.

I don't get why this is so complicated: Obey the law.

I think this truck gets a pass on this one because of the snow. Looks like nowhere to park easily. If he's still there when the snow is gone, different story.

The snow was actually plowed up on the sidewalk, there was no snow on the street at all. The farmers market is there every week and so are the trucks. Rain or shine, snow or tropical weather.

The argument that you think this truck gets a pass on this one because of the snow doesnt hold much credence, its abuse clear and simple.
