Personal Parking Spot

Observed by etan2r on Sat, Mar 24 2007

There's always a nice big spot in front of the hydrant for this state of NY van. This is the second time I'm showing this van parked in front of the hydrant.

etan2r,
Thank you for posting again. Can you please put the name of the agency in the post. Last time you listed as NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. That department called us and told us that van is not theirs, that it is indeed a NY State vehicle.

But I'd like to know which State agency, please.

Is that an alternative fuel vehicle? What if a fire hose fitting or apparatus punctures the CNG tank?

In light of the amazing saves in todays paper by FDNY on Unionport Rd in the Bronx, this is criminal

You're correct. This is not a Car, this is a van.
The hose would have to go through a convoluted maze to get to the hydrant.

Efficient Streets,
There isn't any information on the van besides the license plate and the state of ny seal, so a direct avenue to identifying the agency is not an option. The van transports mentally challenged individuals who live in a home on my block.

Does anyone know which state agency is responsible for this?

OK. I think I figured it out. I think that the van is owned by the OMRDD
(Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities). http://www.omr.state.ny.us/

What if the home catches fire and the disabled become disoriented and can't get out?

#11,

Nice try. I've called 311 numerous times and have never acheived even getting the van a ticket. One time, I bumped into a meter maid and brought her over to the van. Upon seeing that it was a state vehicle, she remarked that she wouldn't write a ticket because "it wouldn't get paid anyway." And FYI, my neighbors and I have asked the driver repeatedly to quit parking at the hydrant. Finally, with uncivilservants.org we have a new opportunity to try to get this rediculousness to stop.

while it is not a good idea to block a fire hydrant (for safety reasons) perhaps the driver parks there because it is the safest place for him to unload his patients otherwise he would be forced to double park and impede traffic and the patients would be forced to go between parked cars (and if any of them are in wheelchairs this can present an even further hazard and a logistics problem)

By the way, traffic agents are no longer called "meter maids", it's an offensive term both to the agents and to maids. :)
