New York Post: PARK PERK BACK

Reported by uncivil on Thu, Aug 13 2009

A year after the city cracked down on the number of parking placards issued to its workers, the principals union has won its members the right to get 'em back.

As many as 5,000 coveted permits could be restored by an arbitrator's ruling, according to the union -- a nearly 45 percent increase from the 11,000 on-street parking placards now issued to school staffers.

The placard-pulling had violated the union contract, according to the ruling.

Officials yanked five of every six placards issued to schools last year in a bid to reduce pollution and congestion.

I wonder if these principals realize that there aren't enough legal parking spots for these placards? How silly. If I was a member of this union, I'd want my dues back!

For those who'd like to tell them that they're a little short in the intelligence department, you can contact them (Council of School Supervisors and Administrators) at 718-852-3000 or at webmaster@csa-nyc.org. This is their website: http://www.csa-nyc.org/

Law you need to learn about contracts. Evidently where you work there is no contract. The arbitrator ruled according to the contract. The union did the right thing. The placards never should have been taken away. That goes to show you that Bloomy can't do what he wants.

I wonder if the IRS will tax these perks? Somebody's comment on Streetsblog:
-----
"If placards are a job perk for principals, they likely are "income" for IRS purposes. So the principals would have to pay income tax on the fair market value of a reserved parking spot in that neighborhood.

In fact, it may be that the city is required under federal law to withhold that "income" from the teachers' paychecks. It'll be interesting to see whether Bloomberg, or the IRS, has the guts to carry that out."

I hate to tell you so but I informed you about this fact on another thread. In anticipation of Bloomberg trying to get rid of parking placards that are mandated by union contracts, some unions have already switched to making their own parking permits much like the FDNY does now. Eventually the TEA will get union based parking permits as well as the Teacher's union. Imagine that, while Mayor Mikey is touting an 11,000 reduction in city issued placards he is failing to mention the sudden appearance of 60,000 union issued parking permits. This does not bode well for the Mayor or the TA. Where will all these cars park you asked? WHERE EVER THEY DAMN WANT TO. I will be granting them courtesy on a regular basis. If we are lucky they will utilize some of these useless bike lanes.

As for these parking placards being a taxable perk, I can only say to Law " STOP EMBARRASSING YOURSELF WITH SUCH DRIBBLE". These are union perks and union issued placards. There is no monetary value attached to these pieces of cardboard. Might I suggest you take a civil service exam in order to partake of the simple joys of a City/Union issued parking permit.

Fuss: LAW can take the test if he would like too. He doesn't need a parking permit, He doesn't drive.

We're not jealous hungtat. I think you guys are jealous. We can park where ever we feel like. You don't have that privilege. You go right ahead and buy yours. I don't have to.

It would seem that jealousy runs deep in a select bunch of posters here. Why they envy that which is provided by our unions is beyond me. What they seek to do is destroy our god given right at any cost. Just because you ride a bicycle to work does not mean that I should do the same . We have freedom of choice and being such I choose to drive my Hemi truck to work and park it where ever my city issued placard allows me to. This is the nature of the beast and the sooner some here accept it the sooner they will attain inner peace.

Lawandorder if the tax us on the placards because it sometimes gets us out of a ticket. Then we can park where ever we want with a single chance of getting a ticket. If you think the placard is a problem know. Just wait and see what happens if they try to tax us for this perk.

Mikeb and all the others: What you should do is park in all the legal spots in the area and only give up the spot to a fellow worker. Then you will see all the jealous people who don't have placards start crying because they can't find a place to park. Then you will see them stop complaining. The only ones that won't complain are the ones that don't drive.
