Medical Emergency: Doctor is in and in and in

Observed by Dick Tracy on Wed, Mar 28 2007

This fine hypocratic oath care giver parks days on end in a NO PARKING zone with a bogus placard and enforcement just walks on by.

East 68th Street is a cesspool of illegal parking and at best an MD is allowed 3 hours outisde a medical office for an emergency. This must be one hell of an epidemic,

Community board 8 was asked to revert this street to normal street parking but for some reason despite DOT approval based on a council member's request continues to stone wall.

Now the docs i would guess live on the block...

Here's your problem... timing these MD plates for 3 hrs is impractical and the docs know it... that is why TEAs walk right on by... its not the permit but the plate, and the need to document the start time and return for the 3 hr end time...

Why are you blocking out cops license plates but not others?? Is there no concern for their safety as for cops as in the prior posts???

Can't the enforcement officers see that this is a fake placard? "registered at the New York County Medical Society?" What's that suppossed to mean? At least the cop et al have real placks!

Its not the placard that is getting the free pass but the MD plates...

It says on the card to allow a reasonable time. I think a week is reasonable. The agents writing summonses have given me the 3 hour summons. In California, they mark your tires.

BTW, they used to carry a tape measure with a ring on it to measure the distance on hydrants. Surprised me with that one when I sarcastically asked.

Said she still had it too.

In NYC, you don't need to mark tires. The TEA have nifty little things in their hands - computers technology - that allow for a scan of the VIN, time stamped, so they can follow-up.

I recently engaged a TEA and asked if they had to mark tires. She laughed in my face and asked where I was from. "Out West, where we still do it the old-fashioned way," I said.

So if they can "mark the cars" then why do some many cars feed the meter in NYC?

^^what does that mean?

The enforcement people are told not ticket placards and MD's. Their little scanners can handle the timing issue but they claim the same agent would not be making the second observation. One would think with computers they can handle that. Does their little computer comunucate witha main server somewhere?

One would think an agent seeing the same cars parking just about every day any time they pass might contact their superior and deal with it.

One would think the dept would not be 15 to 20 years behind in most of its technology... it is a slow, lumbering beast that is always playing catch-up.

FairPlay:

In fact, we now review all complaints for obvious problems. Our goal, however, is not to achieve perfection, but (in part) to have a dialog about what should or shouldn't be a concern of this site.

The reason that we're allowing posts with doctors, etc., is that the deference given to their placards seems to be part of the same problem of knee-jerk deference to anything that looks official on the dashboard. As a policy, this has the great advantage of being really, really simple and avoiding any hassle for the legitimate permit parkers. We think that this simplicity, however, comes at a too high of a cost, and part of that cost is the doctors, etc. parking illegally with impunity.

And as for comment moderation, this is something we continue to explore. I'll take this as a vote "for" comment moderation. :-)

Salguod, I'd go with moderation and / or requiring registration to post.

Keeps both extremes from overpowering the aims of this site.

As far as the NYPD being behind the times, there are 2 users in NY state that keep a certain typewriter company in business.

One is prisoners who aren't allowed computer access, the other is the NYPD who just gave out a $330,000 contract for typewriter repair. Hard to believe.

As far as feeding the meter, you are only allowed one coin or one time period, you can't stay all day, hence the term "feeding the meter"

I left California in 1976, couldn't take anymore partying (again hard to believe, I know) and I couldn't get a newspaper worth reading.

That was the last time I saw them marking the tires, except for once long ago in NYC (yet again hard to believe)

I live with the NYPD being behind the times on a daily basis... i'm still waiting on certain technological advancements the dept spoke about nearly 15 years ago... most other depts were using said technology at the time

Perhaps I am naive but I fail to see how posting license plates threatens anyone's safety. The plates are publically displayed on the car, nothing links the license plate to an individual. Even if it did is the site outing undercover Firefighters and doctors? And when the police are undercover they don't use their personal cars. The safety issue is merely an attempt by permit abusers to avoid public shame and reprimand.

#17 I don't think you are naive... few people understand the Law Enforcement Officer's perspective on this... and fewer still understand the power of the internet and it's ability to ID people and their homes with very little info. The internet also give people some level of anonymity if they decide they wish to do harm.

Putting me at risk is one thing (and not something i would be very happy with)... putting my family's safety at risk brings it to a whole new level.

The moderators of this site have been VERY understanding with this issue. Plates are still being uploaded into the database. The information is still being forwarded to the relevant city agencies for action and reprimand.

The plates are NOT being posted for view by the general public... there is no need. I feel shame for each of the more dangerous permit abuses and not one is my vehicle...

I personally an respecting the issue of not showing plates on the public photo even though it makes the case weaker when plcards are not shown, However when it comes to scofflaws like this MD and NYP I intend to very clearly show the plates and placards,

In my community we are trying to get signs changed to mnormal street parking and making a string case against the scofflaws is an impotant aspect of that effort, I would like nothing better than to get on with my life, but not having a level playing field when it comes to curbside parking is making it very difficult to survive here.

I don't see how not showing the plates on the public photo makes anything weaker... since the plates are still stored and forwarded for action showing the plate for all to see adds nothing.

That being said, I wish to thank all that are keeping plates out of public view

I am trying to get community board 8 to act to change the signs.

I am respecting this sites wishes to avoid nonsense with law enforcenent even though I feel their argument is bogus, but I wil be damned if I am going to play that game with MD's and NYP and dentists from NJ.
