New York Post: 'COP' CAR BLOCKS HYDRANT AT FIRE

Reported by uncivil on Mon, Aug 24 2009

A car sporting an official NYPD placard issued to cops blatantly blocked a fire hydrant yesterday in The Bronx -- as a blaze broke out in the apartment building directly in front of it.

Instead of being able to hook up their hoses to the hydrant, frustrated firefighters had to rely on handheld fire extinguishers to put out the kitchen blaze that broke out on the top floor of a six-story building at 206 East 198th Street in Fordham.

About 60 firefighters arrived at 11:46 a.m. and had the blaze out around noon, fire officials said.

Four young children were taken to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Richard Blatus, an acting FDNY deputy chief, said it was unclear whether the 1998 White Volvo blocking the hydrant belonged to a cop. But another fire official at the scene told The Post it was an unmarked police vehicle.

The vehicle displayed parking credentials for Queens' narcotics bureau.

There is a list of victims that continues to grow through willful non-enforcment of illegal acts by city employees by other city employees charged with the responsibility of protecting this city's citizenry.

Look who's chiming in. Hiyall the one who has no clue of what he's talking about. That is an unmarked police car.

Being an unmarked police car - does that make it safer? Dragonman you are really stretching with your fallacious arguments to defend this undefendable behavior. This car no matter its status, classification (even a civilian car without and placard) is exactly the safety hazard that it is.

That is the essence of the issue here - isn't it? The non-enforcement just encourages this dangerous behavior and peer pressure against those who actually enforce the law helps perpetuate it. Hmmm - perhaps from you yourself on occasion.

Great work, NYPD!

They don't ticket their own. Get used to it.

This fire was a small kitchen fire. The FDNY did not use any of their hoses to extinguish the fire. All that was needed was a fire extinguisher. Way to make a story out of nothing. Also being that FD made a big deal out of this. I will assume that all discretion towards fdny placards will be revoked for the next few weeks.

This one is not about being ticketed or not. The fact is any car blocking fire hydrant is unacceptable. I sometimes risk parking a bit close to the fire hydrant but not directly next to it.

If you park less then 15 feet away from the hydrant. Then you are blocking the hydrant according to the NYS LAW.
